This is good reading and fortuitous timing for me too as I'm about to order new 17" tyres for the Style 66s I'm getting refurbed for my E39 touring

I'd already discounted the PS4s as having had them in the past; they are superb tyres. But what I don't like it how they seem to get hard once the outer few mm of soft sticky rubber wears off, and I found they tend to drone, a lot too!

My choices had been:

Nexen N'Fera SU1s (the cheapest I'd ever go personally for tyres; but have found them to be superb in the past)
Uniroyal RainSport 5s
Falken FK 510s
Conti Contact 6s
Goodyear Eagle F1s

I still haven't made my full decision; I've never used the Conti's or Falkens before; the RainSport 3s I've had in the past have been superb and the 5s are fitted to my wife's Racing Jazz and father in laws 530D and they are excellent tyres.

I do know the Conti's and Falkens get great reviews

What I am after is that bit more of a compliant ride; the E39 tourings are much firmer damped on the rears due to the SLS and I'm after a tyre that'll just give that bit more with a touch softer sidewall; hence the Uniroyals and Falkens. But from what I've read, the Contis and F1s will offer this too!

For what you're looking for, I'd ward you off the ContiSportContact6 - They're a fantastic tyre in the warm (Dry and wet), and are dynamically excellent - I'd compare them to Cup2s in regards to handling balance and feel.

That being said, they're fairly stiff as a result, massively do not like the cold - Damp and sub 5c, it's icerink time, and in my application (Civic FK8 Factory fit) were pretty much done after ~6K miles.

Certainly an excellent tyre in the right applications, but not as much of a jack of all trades as the PS4S (Which I've somewhat gone off of now as I found the sidewalls were far too soft, leaving them a bit numb and dynamically boring compared to CSC6 / Cup2 - Despite their excellent grip)

Sticks.

Thanks for the replies - they were helpful.

So I've had the Eagle F1 Asym 5 tyres on for a few hundred miles on various roads and at various speeds and although they might still be 'running in', I think the Eagles feel less sporty but more comfy than the P Zeros they replaced.
I wasn't as impressed at first as other F1's I've had, and thought them a little noisy. But now I'm totally happy, and yes, most of the little bumps no longer notice.

Cheers

Well I run dedicated winter alloys & tyres for the colder months and tend to swap onto summers the beginning of April and back to winters towards the end of October etc

And to be fair I'll be lucky to see 3-4k miles this year; so wear/longevity isn't what I worry about smile

If you're looking for comfort bias, the Falken is a good option. It also just won the ADAC test: https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/2021-ADAC-Summ...

A bit off topic, but will PH ever create a dedicated tyre forum?

Thanks; saw that before whilst nosying through tyrereviews.com

They're deffo of serious interest

I think it'll be down to the FK510s, Eagle F1s and Uniroyal RS5s and which have the best price at that time

It'll be a good few weeks yet before I get them ordered as currently I've nowhere to store them as the garage is about to be levelled and my office is full of white goods, my tool chest and all sorts of other clobber. Adding 4 tyres to that isn't happening laugh

Remember the 453s always being thought of favourably. Never had them myself, but know plenty of owners that had them and always raved about them

They were the days when the Toya T1R tyres were the bees knees etc... They seem to have lost their way now re sporty tyres

They were replaced by the FK510 in 2016!

The 453 never actually did that well in testing, which is a shame as the 452 was much loved (but never tested), the latest gen of falken tyres, which is the FK510 and ZE310 are excellent tyres and consistently do well in tests. They're now owned by sumitomo rubber so have some big money behind them.

I hated the FK452 and 453.

I bought the 452 after the rave reviews and found them mediocre at best. Then everyone said the 453 was better and we put them on Fiona's mapped 123d and thought they were terrible.

Ah, it's the 452s I was referring to. They were good tyres from memory, driving pals DC2s, EK9s and DC5s etc

It's your reviews that I've seen recently that's made me seriously consider the F1s...

Just a shame most reviews are for 18" upwards tyres, I'm sticking with the 17" alloys on my touring for now.

I'm sure they'll still make for a superb tyre

Can't think of anywhere else to put it, but I've got a bit of a video request:- It'd be interesting / entertaining to see a comparison between a trackday tyre / semi slick Cup2 vs budget ditchseeker in wet conditions to see what wins - quantity of tread or compound and construction in terms of times and handling, given the disasterous results that some budgets have had in the past.

Thanks for your excellent YouTube videos thumbup I run a Giulia QV as my daily so your UHP test with the M2 was really informative.

Very happy with the SuperSports. First impressions. The sidewalls seemed slightly harder than the Corsas they replaced, potholes seemed a little harsher, but not annoyingly so. Steering felt a little heavier but not in a negative way. It's still very responsive and direct. Wet weather grip is phenomenal. Even in Race with the TC off its very predictable. Finally had some dry weather so I've had some B road blasts. Really good turn in and grip on apex and corner exit. Still get a little slip from 3rd to 4th redlining in Race with manual, but very predictable. I've so much more confidence with the car that's for sure.

haha that's an awesome idea. Once I've got the M3 up and running I'll see what I can do. I'm not sure it's useful advice, but it'll be a fun test!

That's awesome, thanks for the feedback! I've not had much time on the Corsas, other than doing the Mille Milleigiage with Sam in a QV, and I really liked them (in the dry). Cheeky request, but if you get the time I'd appreciate a review over at https://www.tyrereviews.com/submit.htm?match=Goody... as you've quite a nice bit of experience there smile
