Project Moderna production confirmed

GTO Engineering opens the order book on its epic V12 sports car

Hard not to be distracted by the artwork when wrote about visiting GTO Engineering last year - but buried in that PH Meets was some very exciting news. Using its expertise with Ferrari's V12 sports cars of the 1960s, the firm intended to embark on its own reimagination of the formula: Project Moderna.

Unsurprisingly, the subsequent response to the announcement has convinced GTO to give the new car the go ahead. Described as "the best of Sixties motoring with a modern and motorsport-derived engineering twist", the Moderna is being built to three commitments: it's going to weigh less than 1,000kg, it will have a naturally aspirated engine and it will have a manual gearbox. And it'll look like these latest renderings, too. A better sports car recipe you could hardly imagine.

The quad-cam V12 is said to be close to completion, assembled in house at GTO. It even looks good as CAD mockup. As for the chassis, a bespoke 'muletto' arrangement is being used for the Moderna, which aims to remain faithful to the proportions of the its inspiration while also accommodating people and things a little better. As GTO founder Mark Lyon puts it: "People have got a little taller since the Sixties, so we're... ensuring that the driver and passenger have enough room in the cabin and ample luggage space in the car." The muletto is comprised of tubular steel with aluminium subframes, the layout to be optimised for weight distribution.

With production now confirmed, GTO Engineering has also "formally opened its order books" on Project Moderna. Those who do secure a place on the list are promised "one of the most exciting enthusiast cars of the decade". Given everything we know of the company, there seems little reason to doubt that. More news when we have it.

Looks good and, as long as they keep the price reasonable, then sign me up! What's that? The price......oh lordy!

I hope the ergonomics are better inside than "let's put the petrol cap where the nozzle will drip all over the boot".

I wonder if Ferrari's lawyers (or perhaps Zagato's) will come knocking. Although they lost a recent case against Ares in Italy they may still have some options open.

Appreciate that it's only a rendering - but that looks absolutely superb. Hopefully they keep it relatively restrained and focus on that elegance when it comes to the interior too.

I'm sure the price will be eye-watering, but for the lucky few who can get themselves into these things it'll be a compelling choice.

Hmmmm, bet it doesn't ever see light if day looking like that.

A bit of fun for the lad on the CAD system I spose...

If this is road legal and doesn‘t require the butchering of a real ferrari to be registered, this is the greatest car of the ‘20s.

And the future of sportscars.

If not, it’s sad.

So it's a pastiche of a 250SWB with hints of 250GTO and a Zagato double bubble roof. I'm sure it'll be beautifully engineered and built but they could've come up with something original rather than make it look like a kit car.

Given Ferrari throw lawyers at anything vaguely associated with the brand, how could they let this slide?

Sort of liking that the future of motoring is actually the past and that car design could be all about taking the best of what's gone before and updating to modern engineering and quality standards. Most of these restomods look amazing.

Ok so car design becomes a lot more "fashionable" but lets face it who wouldn't choose a Singer over the latest 992. That said the 911 is one of the few cars that still pays some homage to its historical design cues. It goes to show that not everything old has dated badly and not everything new or different is aesthetically pleasing. Same logic would take me to a 1970's Heuer cushion case over a brand new Hublot every time. We make things better than we used but not always prettier.

Agreed, seeing Jaguar successfully sued Proteus in Sweden over their D-type replica, one would have thought Ferraris solicitor would have been all over this...?
Anyhoo, the price will be twice what any reasonably rich person could afford. Or justify.
And those wheels; gods trousers, they are awful and I may be a little antediluvian in my outlook but huge wheels do not suit a 250 shape in my old eyes.

I rank the original 250GT SWB as probably my #1 car of all time in terms of sheer desirability. The Moderna seems like an awful lookalike kit car effort that you should be able to buy with the fibreglass still needing finishing for <£20k to build in your garage on your own. With the engine of your choice...likely a crate LS.

There. I said it.

About had enough of Petrolheads. Regurgitation of road reports, press reports and crap like this. Yep I'm done!

Or you could just wiggle it round a bit to get the drops off before you pull it out like you do with any other car......

As an innocent, may I ask an innocent question; a decent proportion of PH content is mirrored on CarThrottle, almost word for word and very often article for article, that I have to wonder, are they linked?
Of course they both also seem to have their own stories I dependent of each other, so I’m not criticising, just asking the question...

Wot indeed! "wrote" is the new "woke".

Find it hard to get too excited about this. So many "best car of the 21st century", "never see the like again", "less than x kg", "0-62 in y.z seconds", "blah blah blah" that its getting hard to keep up! getmecoat

I don't know why anybody would buy this over the 250SWB replica that they also produce.
