passed test in 95, but was a student until 2001 so no need for my own car
In hols I drove my Mum's 214SLi - I remember the folks at 5 a side being impressed by it (sad I know)

by way of proxy my best mates had;
Cavalier Mk3 1.6 (was decent at the time)
Golf 4 TDI (we thought this was the biz when he got it)
205GTi (that really was the nuts)
And one rich g1t had a Mercedes 380SEC, he drove it to dental school every day...

May 1990 - 1993 205 GTI 1.6
1993 - 1995 BMW 318i
1995 - 1997 Mercedes C220
1997 to end of decade, VW Polo CL and Mazda MX5.
Company cars from 90 to 97 then private, commuting by train at the time thus a station car and weekend car. I was lucky all were new except the Mercedes which I got when my boss left. Then changed jobs in 1997, no company car.

Mazda RX7 Turbo
VW Corrado 1.8 16v
Mazda MX5
Ford Sierra 2.9i 4x4 Ghia Estate
Peugeot 306 XND
VW Passat 110 TDI

I was born in the 1960s so was able to afford fairly decent stuff by the 1990s. All were new of fairly new.
The 90s started off well but ended up in rather dull diesel company cars.

'89/90 - all brand new on a G plate:
Cavalier GL - had this about 2 months before switching jobs
BMW 316i - T-boned some idiot tourist who turned across my bows so got swapped for
Mercedes 200E - Bloody tank! Best-built car I think I've had to this day

'94:
Mercedes C180

'96 - temp cars whilst working in States for 6 months:
Mercedes 300E - boring, detuned PoS
BMW 530 - much better but prone to things going wrong or dropping off

'97
Mercedes C250 diesel estate

I did work for a group of companies that included a MB dealership mind you biggrin

The cars I owned in the 90s were

These are some cars I got to regularly drive in the 90s

Out of the ones I owned the Mitsubishi Colt was the best. 950kg and 130hp made it quite sprightly and the four wheel drift and lift-off oversteer were easily accessible. Toledo was like most VAG products of the era - well built but dull.

The stuff I didn’t own was also great. 850 looked nice, but the M3 was more inspiring.

Haven’t owned a car with 4 cylinders since (although I did have a company 4 pot diesel for 9 months before opting out of the company car plan).

Passed my test in '97. First car in '97 was a Mk5 Escort 1.3 LX that i bought off a teacher at my sixth form, followed by the purchase of a R5 GTT in late '98.

I'm another that passed their test in 1997.

Also over the past summer I have been scanning in old photos so can show the actual vehicles too. smile

Pre 1997 I clearly wasn't driving on the roads, but I did drive across the fields (on the farm) in these two vehicles.

My first "car" at 17 was this. Which if I'd had a crystal ball I'd have not sold!

300Tdi Defender 90

My Dad & I also restored this, which I had free access too. Learnt how to drift and powerslide in this.

Both the above sold for this as I wanted something "fast". Base spec 1.8

Then I had this VVC one after selling the 1.8i. The VVC was my Dad's but I had it for a while.

Which then made way for this

And this (5.3 V12)

1997-2000 I also had access and drive these quite a lot which belonged to my parents.

2.5TD (VM)

6.0 V12 - to date this is still one of the Best cars I've ever driven.

4.6 V8

Hmm, dry spell for me.

Started with a 2.8 Capri.

Replaced with an XR4i.

Then because by now I was in the Army I downgraded to a Escort Mk3 1600 Ghia.

Then I sold that and was car less for a few years ( long periods away plus could not afford one ).

Then a girlfriend bought me an Escort Mk3 XR3i for a surprise birthday present ( it was a Y reg and absolutely immaculate).

I kept that till the end of the decade ( couple of years) it’s the car I had the fondest memories of.

Very highly modded rover coupe turbo - loved that car.

Fiat Mirafiori 131 1600 Estate.
Piece of st. Engine blew up.

Ford Escort 1.4 Estate
Piece of st. Crashed it into a ditch full of water and it never ran again.

Mk1 Golf 1.6 Convertible
Piece of st. Engine blew up.

BMW E30 316i coupé.
Loved this car, but it was still a piece of st. Engine blew up.
