How is hunting and shooting "cheap"?

And why is running a base-spec A6 for a long time splurging?
I think the original comment was sarcastic.

Nevertheless, these activities will be tax deductible so cheap or not they’ll be up to half the price you and I would pay.

Not sure anyone said base-spec A6’s. A well optioned A6 with the interior extended leather options all ticked will (almost) compare to an A8/S500/750i etc.

Depends on your definition of "posh", I mean if you're incredibly well heeled (talking never worked a day in your life, the trust fund is bringing in tens of millions a month and you have "staff" for mundane things like buying cars) Rolls Royce has you pretty much covered.

The problem is the luxury manufacturers went high volume so for example Bentley is pretty much everywhere. Same with Mercedes etc. Roll back the clock 40 years that simply wasn't the case.

When my mates Dad got a Merc in 1982 we were like ooh! You saw them around but they weren't common place (suburban London).

Fast forward 40 years every other car is prestige(?) German. I suppose its a case of when everything's posh, nothing is (except the extreme end of the market).
Full effect of the monthly installment industry.

Nobody wants to wait for anything, and everyone can appear to be wealthy.

How exactly is leasing a white A-class Merc make a 20-something girl with blonde highlights, Jordan nails, a 400gbp Louis Vuitton entry-level bag and an oversized pink-gold-plated Michael Kors watch look "wealthy", other than from her very limited ppoint of view?

I know a few people who have just got tesla cars and virtue signalling isn’t their motivation and doesn’t even come into it.

For them Tesla is sub zero cool and the must have brand and product. The fact the small model is very affordable on company car schemes means it’s spreading quickly.

It seems for some it’s the latest Apple phenomenon of must have thing.

Obviously this is only based on the small sample of people I have spoken to and won’t represent everyone. One person did tell me they are saving a fortune through tax and petrol, but again that wasn’t linked to virtue signalling.
You've basically described virtue signalling. It's the must have brand and product. i.e. people want to be seen in them. And why are Tesla's a must-have brand? Because they are "saving the world".
have you ever spoken to someone who drives a tesla? IME they're people wanting luxury products. Certainly in this country, maybe in LA or the daily express or whatever the eco-credentials signify something but the people driving them here aren't probably even aware. It'd be an incredibly vapid person to virtue signal their eco-credentials with 100 grand luxury car although I don't doubt they exist.

~

Typifying people on the basis of wealth is completely asinine anyway when most plonkers are trying to convince everyone they either have more of it or less of it than they've assumed you think.

No , because he's not interested in pouring cash into a depreciating "look at me" st box... Shrewd fellow.

And we're back to this notion that the "only" choices are being rich and not spending it on cars thus being "Shrewd" or buying a depreciating "look at me" stbox?

If someone has money and isnt in to cars thats fine but that doesnt necessarily make them a "shrewd fellow". We are on a motoring forum, right?

Many multi millionaires / billionaires are more than happy to spend on cars / boats / helicopters / whatever.

So what happened the "posh people"?

Taking it as a slang name for the Upper Class, they've pretty much been replaced by the Elite class. That top 5% or so in society. Some of them are old money, some of them are Lords or whatever, but most of them are likely billionaires built from business interests (self made or family).

So being "posh" proves diddly these days.

So the real question is - what are the Elite driving? And thats back to if they want to be subtle moreoften its high end Teslas or the likes. If they dont give a st about cars maybe its some average car (but i would imagine much rarer than we're being led to believe on here). And if they dont give a rats ass about what people think then they're driving whatever they want and are in to the realms of the usual stuff like Ferraris, Lambos, Bentleys, etc.

So kid yourselves all you like, but have a look down this list of the richest 1,000 people in the UK and tell me which of them really really really drives a 25 year old Volvo or whatever held together with bailer twine.

Honestly?

The only family I know that is properly, epically loaded - we're talking 10+ houses around the world in various tax havens and ski resorts - have so many different cars at different houses that the dealers basically organize it for them.

Apart from a Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead coupe which is the daily driver, Range Rover concierges just turn up to their properties, pick up the cars for service etc, and swap them for new ones when the lease is up. The cars are mostly RR autobiographies, I don't even think they choose the spec, the dealer just ticks the boxes. I'm sure they are getting fleeced...but the money doesn't matter. I think they have a few X5s as house cars (staff, guests etc), too.

The luxury isn't in the car itself, it's in it always being brand new, always fully fueled, always clean, and available at any time, wherever they are.
Landrover do a service which for a FFRR costs £1.8k pm and you can choose a new one every 6 months, all you do is fuel it.

Was he wearing a bin bag held up with an old bit of rope?
No; a suit and shirt. Both fitted him very well. I don't know if he has a crime-fighting alter-ego, but he basically looked very Christian-Bale-era Bruce Wayne.

It’s not though as you’re rewriting the OP question. I suspect he fully understands what you’re saying, but you’ve missed the point.

He’s come across an old brochure for Daimler containing images of a number of ‘posh’ people. For a bit of fun he’s pondered what would they drive today as car choice and brands have changed.

So forget all the modern society for one minute and ask yourself, what are these two buying if they walked into a dealer now?

A clue is that these two are not going to suddenly say they are driving in that get up in a lambo. I can see the lady fainting at the sight of scissor doors.

Unfortunately I think the boring answer is a br green RR for them and an s class to be driven in.

Although this was my take on the OP but could be miles off and the answer is that these two would probably turn up to the ambassadors ball with a box of ferrero rocher in a 1997 diesel Volvo or get a lift in Kerry kotanona’s stretched Bentley GT in baby blue.

Same for the Japanese businessmen but potentially a Lexus.

At the risk of being pedantic, that (the bit in bold) is not what he pondered. What he wrote was:

There's a huge difference between the sort of car someone would chose to drive versus be driven in. The OP's question was about the latter but everyone seems to want to talk about the former.

Range Rover LWB to be driven in. Space, enough luxury, and height for enjoying the view. Common enough to not really be noticeable.

Bentayga et al seem more designed for the driver than a Range.

I don’t think posh cars really exist anymore

Most of those thought of as posh (wealthy) have moved on to many other forms of personal transport (helicopters, yachts, etc.) and I imagine just getting driven in whatever - probably a LWB RR as above or one of the many super luxury Vito conversions.

ok, to help the somewhat less enlightened members here.

Lets forget "posh" because too many people think "Bishop's'S Avenue's" and "infinetey Pool".

Lets talk about the respectable upper class, minor royals, diplomats, ministers (Tory), landed gentry, maybe maybe some "men about town" in a Claus von Bülow way, Viscount Edward Snowden etc.

Navy blue S-Class? Dark grey Mulsanne? Dove grey Ghost? BRG FFRR? All of the above, but with modestly sized wheels and no privacy glass deleted? Audi A6 Allroad PoW spec?
