I fly up to Glasgow occasionally, rent a car at the airport and travel around 2.5 hours out to the West Coast of Argyll to visit my wife's parents, more frequently recently as her mother is ill.

I typically just rent a typical mid-sized hatch, an Astra or a Focus or some hideous French thing.

This is a wonderful drive, mainly national speed limits and relatively free of traffic, with some great views, rises, hills, valleys, sweeping corners and is generally a driver's dream.

As such, it needs a driver's car to really enjoy what the road has to offer.

I discovered Avis have what they call a Prestige range, which has examples from Mercedes and BMW, but also more tempting drives like a V8 F-Type R or a 992 911 Carrerra.

This is proving very tempting for my next trip out this way. Has anyone rented something like this from mainstream rental companies' more exclusive range, and if so can indicate the likely cost of rental over a weekend or a week? Any experiences to share?

£600 for a 3-day weekend in the Jag according to Avis' website.

ETA £1200 for the week. I'd imagine the choice of models available at Glasgow might be limited; plenty of Range Rovers and Exec-class cars listed; the Jag is the only fun car.

i have hired an f type to do the nc500 from Glasgow airport Avis but hired it during the week at cheaper rates. I managed 750 miles in 3 days so i think i got a good deal as there was no mileage limit on the v6.

I’ve hired from Avis Prestige (a FFRR when I wanted to have one as an extended test drive before buying). Car was in absolute A1 condition and the service great. Highly recommend and would use again.

ETA: pricing seemed reasonable, all quoted and booked via their Prestige website.

Hired F type R for a weekend with Avis prestige. Very good customer care, car was mint and almost brand new, unlimited mileage.

Was kindly advised not to do triple figures for any length of time because they had a tracker.

Would recommend.

I hired a Range Rover for a weeks holiday on Jersey, rental company was Europcar, cost about £1,200 for the week. Was just like any other car rental, no big issues, car was a bit older and more scruffy than I’d expected but that’s not a big deal in a rental. Enjoyed driving it round for the week. Hire cars in Jersey have a ‘H’ at the start of the numberplate (the locals call them Horror cars) and two people asked me if it was really a rental.

Enterprise also have an exotic car range with some nice stuff. You'll need to look a bit harder for it on their site as I don't think it was on the regular search function.

I've also heard of this mob, but have no experience of them: https://modernclassics.cc/location/scotland-car-hi...

As said by others, it's readily available. Just read the excess damage amounts carefully , as will be higher than normal rentals, and self-insure if comfortable with the risk, or see if you can get excess insurance.

If cynical like me smile you will also suspect that hire car companies will always try to claim max excess as "due to the damage we couldn't hire it out to anyone else" which is probably a lie and it is hired out.

I can’t see Porsche listed anywhere? I’d do it if I can’t get an extended test drive.

Just looked at Enterprise exotics - 6k deposit, 10k excess.

Strange definition of exotics too, a Msport 4 series coupe and a boxster s in the range, admittedly alongside the instargram FX traders favourites of the huracan and Conti GT.

Good idea if you want an extended test drive, as others have mentioned, but very expensive if it goes wrong.

Interesting. I’ve rented two F-Type R’s from them and took them both deep into three figures for extended periods of time. I was wondering about a tracker but seeing as I heard no complaints...

The second time I was actually looking for a 992 but due to something rather they didn’t have one. They used to offer them in Glasgow but I checked the other day and it was just the FTR now.

I heard a tale of someone who had a minor prang in one, he contacted the rental company and said he needed the car a few days longer and they were happy to extend. He then begged the local trusted bodyshop with sensible labour rates to take it on as an emergency job and had it repaired himself. Cost a lot less than it would have done and rental company were none the wiser.

Hired an M2 from Thrifty a couple of years ago. Just like a normal hire really. But as others have said, the excess will be high or excessively high.

Excess insurance that covers the car is essential. Read the small print carefully as many have 30k/50k value limits. I think insurance4carhire is/was 120k limit so should cover most things.

On the roads where you're going a couple of hundred a day on a nice car will be a great investment. Enjoy!
