The opposite of the "soothing" car thread. Which has the least palatable ride you've been in?

I'd go first gen Cooper S Works with sports suspension plus and run flats. Don't actually think there was any damping, and it made M Sport suspension seem forgiving!

Aggressively lowered Rover Tomcat on low profile tyres, assuming a traction engine doesn't count!

A colleague's B8 Audi A4 S-Line. Had absolutely no give in it all. Made me wince at times. Also had the loudest tyre roar I've ever heard in a car.

Shortly afterwards, I had the exact same car but in SE trim, and it was transformational. So much nicer to drive and to ride in.

My dad used to have a Suzuki SJ410 which he drove me back from the pub in once. I was sat in the back, and that was not a place you want to be after a skinful - leaf sprung, sitting right over the rear axle, and cramped. He could have picked me up in his Saab but oh no...

I wasn't sick but it was a close run thing.

Second to that was my wife's old Mini Cooper R50 - part of the reason she sold it was because her commute increased and it was no fun buzzing along in a juddering little car. Completely forgiveable as it handled oh so sweetly when you were on it, but for what she used it for it wasn't great.

Fiat Panda 100hp. Decent little car in many respects but I'm not sure why they bothered with springs and dampers as the same ride quality would have been achieved by using hard rubber blocks instead.

My A3 2.0 tsfi S Line on the standard 40 profile 18" alloys

It was horrendous, even when I ran winters with tall profile 16" tyres, its put me off Audi's for life.

A lot of people say this, but they really aren't that bad, though the short wheelbase gives a lot of pitching on speed bumps.

Astra 888 thing. Diesel powered if memory serves but so stiffly sprung it bounced around so much i think it spent more time airborne than in contact with the ground.
And my mates A6 with the awful large diameter low profiles

Austin Allegro - f me, if ever something made me decide the country had no future, that was it.
What an absolute heap of st. Didn't help that the suspension was collapsed, not that you'd have noticed.
It was just dreadful in every respect....most of all just being seen driving it. Mustard yellow with dog stickers on the windows! Properly destroyed my street cred, but it was a summer job I suppose (owned by the employer). Even the Reliant Robin I drove later was less embarrassing.

My RS Megane (was a DCI175 but same setup as the R26) with cup pack was interesting, not too bada s a driver but rear passengers complained A LOT!

That wasn't that surprising, but the last few gens of civic had pretty shocking ride quality for what they were , FIL had a few and all but latest gen were shocking in the back and he had old man spec with smaller wheels

I'm not going to disagree with you that the Allegro was a POS for a huge number of reasons, but it would have had excellent ride quality if it wasn't broken. It was one area The Firm always excelled in.

a Renault Captur hire car, received when my Astra had a recall for its clutch. After a day had back pain and was due to be using it for another couple of weeks. I use hire cars fairly often, but this was the first time I rang them and asked if I could have something else.
To this day I’ve no idea why the Captur is so popular, I honestly didn’t find any redeeming features. Uncomfortable, no driving enjoyment, not good looking, average equipment levels, though it could park itself. It was just crap.

Fiat 500 Abarth. Had as a hire car in Scotland. Bit of a novelty but I suspect would wear thin on long drives.

Civic FD2
BMW M2

Generally cars have just got less compliant and 'sports' setups have become track biased that are pretty rubbish on the roads.

Toyota Corolla. It was like there was no resistance in the suspension so it would just hit the stops immediately. Very crashy ride!
