Hear one in action, described by Mark Hales, in this legendary recording that was issued as a cassette tape with Fast Lane magazine in 1990, along with an Aston Vantage, Countach and Porsche 959.

Thank you for sharing. It just sounds so very Jag. I couldn't have mistaken it for anything else.
Would have been nice if they’d been able to try one in Le Mans spec so you could hear the twin Albrex superchargers too
Performance would have been a bit faster as well no doubt

Loving this, ultra cool. I've a real soft for old Jag's of this period (I'm a former serial XJ40 owner, for my sins...). Dream garage material for me. Not loving the price tag though, but these exorbitant asking prices seem like par for the course now.

The F40 really was quite fast, wasn't it?

The Lister was an odd choice to test agains the it and the 959.

The first time I've wanted the PH-ometer to have an 11.

Personally, if I had to keep it rather than being able to sell it on, I'd take the Lister over the F40 and the Porsche.

The engine bay looks like something out of Tutankhamen's tomb.

The performance numbers of the F40 really excited me at the time(still do to be fair). It certainly didn't hang around as you say! driving

Call me fussy, but the engine bay looks a bit grubby?

It's not a Lister Le Mans; it's a Lister Mk III. The Le Mans had a 'droopsnoot' long nose and optional faired-in back window.
Wasn’t the Le Mans twin supercharged to? Savage beast.

This looks better without the “droopsnoot” IMO

If my numbers came up, I’d be asking Retropower to do something like this but with the Banham FHC rear arches and faired in windows, maybe a more modern Aston V12, or.. sacrilege but a supercharged LS

These are walloping bits of crazy history. And the sound is just sublime. But twice I have gone to see a Lister up for sale and twice all the metal under the paint and bodykit has evaporated.

For cars more likely to be dry stored and used infrequently compared to a normal XJS, they seems to rot three times as quickly.

And the issue with that engine is that by now every monkey with a spanner will have worked r magic of claiming to be an authority, making the issue ten times worse and invoicing £10k.

Look at the weight! I love the Lister, I remember reading the autocar feature back on the day, but it's not an F40 competitor is it! 😜

I think it was just the fastest British car of the time. There wasn't the proliferation of supercars that there is now, and Ferraris and Lamborghinis were actually rare and exciting things to see back then too.

Yes, they do look a fantastic GT car though

I’d certainly want Le Mans spec engine though with the chargers and 6-speed

It is amazing for sure to see such a big engine mated to a 3 pedal manual. cloud9

Yes, bizarrely, old U.S. muscle cars are the ones that sprung to mind - the old Chevelle 454s, Boss 429s and SD455s

I drove one of these in period, I think it was 1990, compared to an XJS V12 it had much tighter body control and handled and held the road totally different. Linked to the manual gearbox the 7 litre V12 engine gave enormous linear performance, I had 160 mph on the speedometer, it still remains the fastest I have driven in a road car.

Still would have had a bit left after 150 mph no doubt

Only big cruisers comparable on performance would be a Lotus Carlton or Alpina Bi-turbo
