I think if you're handy with the spanners and have another car to use when it's out of service running a C215 V8 need not be ruinous. There are rebuild kits for the ABC valve blocks, a hydraulic shop can make up ABC lines that fail, rebuild options on the struts, the engine and gearbox are bullet proof, and many faults can be overlooked or fixed at your leisure.

So it's fine if you value your time at zero.
Everyone values my time at zero, so I didn't want to be left out.

I’d be interested to know the estimate for the cambelt element of the work. I’ve been quoted £750 plus vat in a 430 and that was at a specialist indie albeit using genuine parts (inc water pump). Seems a bit rich to me, but maybe I’m just mean…
Quoted £300 and something ?? for belt only including labour and anything extra like pump, pulley's and tensioner's extra

Was last done 11 years or 15k miles ago

Was quite surprised plugs are not included in the full service confused

Should only be 3-4 hours by the looks, obviously it scales depending what bits you want to replace while it's apart as there's the water pump, thermostat, tensioners, camshaft seals, etc etc.

Some nice metal out in Glasgow today.

Small world, walked past that exact car last week in Partick. Have you looked at the mot history, it’s only done just over 28,000 miles...

I'm not defending the price for a leggy E class, or the oil burning-ness, but a proper colour scheme really transforms even the W212 from a drab uber to an expensive looking car doesn't it?

Totally agree - the colour transforms it. I'm not sure 'metallic brown; does the colour justice. Along with the tan leather, it's a real beaut.

Clearly doesn’t belong to R129SL then.

The lack of silver plastic interior trim helps a lot too. If that was a 350 or 500 petrol it'd be very appealing.

That's a very good spot, a very good price and a very clean MOT history.

I now have my trim back from Olly (thanks Olly) for the SL, so have spent the last couple of days affixing the plastic mounting to the back of it. In other words, lots and lots of Araldite. I’m now at the point where I can put it in the car later, after work, but before I do….

You can see the switches for the roof (and it’s shaped like the roof too - I never noticed that before when in/on the car) and the mirrors adjustment. I have now cleaned them (Sawdust courtest of Olly!) of the previous years of accumalated grot. However - important poll time.

The cables underneath are sufficiently long for either switch to go either side. Should the SL driver prioritise Mirror over Roof, or vice-versa?

I can argue it both ways - I’ll adjust the mirrors more frequently than I do the roof. But it’s really only me drives it - so once set, the roof would be more frequent. The car came with the mirror switch on the LHS, which to my mind would make logical, Teutonic sense as it’s nearer the driver on an LHD car. But I’ve seen others for sale where it’s on the RHS.

So - I welcome your feedback from the three (we’re all non-binary these days) choices:

  • Mirror on the left?
  • Roof on the left?
  • Stop overthinking it you stupid sod? Who cares!? / MX5.

All of this is just an excuse to show the photo of the roof switch really. I thought it was cool.

Both of my129s have roof switch further away from the driver, mirror switch closer. Given neither switch is something you operate more than a few times a trip and it’s not a massive reach either way round I’d go factory (although your original positioning suggests that’s not necessarily the case anyway!).

Good work on the numbers tobinen.

I've got an insurance question for you all.

My E55 insurance is due and I'm wondering if I can get, or even if it's worth getting a proper muticar policy, now I've got two cars?

I think my 320cdi is with Lancaster on some MB club discount, my E55 is with DL.

A lot of companies are doing something like direct line, where they'll insure your second car, but not on a like for like basis, they'll just give you a discount on there second car, but you can't use your NCB.

Also has anyone ever used esure or Sheila's wheels for their insurance? On a comparison site they're nearly £200 cheaper than what I've been quoted by anyone else...it's pretty much half what my renewal quote was. I've always believed is it's too good/cheap to be true, then there must be a catch?!
I used the Admiral multi-car policy when I had my Jag and a V70 as a winter hack and worked out as a pretty inexpensive way of doing it. I only had the policy for 18 months or so. My current 'fleet' are all a bit specialised so the daily is under one regular policy with its own NCB and the other 2 are with classicline under another lot of NCB on a sort of multi-car arrangement.

True!

For me the question would be whether the mirror switch has a neutral central position to stop any errant finger from bodging a mirror? If not, then it'd have to be on the left. Otherwise the most-used button for the roof is on the left for me, but I'm the kind of person who puts the roof down every dry journey in a convertible, irrespective of season.

Is there a European-made car which looks less likely to have a V8 in it than the humble R500?

I can't see why you would buy one of these over an S-max or an XC90 for more than 5 seat family duties. Unless you must have the Merc badge or a V8?

I can't get over the looks of either the exterior or interior and suspect it will be as unreliable as a Range Rover.

How about a V8 XC90 - that probably looks even less likely to have a V8?

I'd have an R63 AMG in a heartbeat.
