Regardless of one's views on personal/messed-with plates, I rather think that one is one which is FAR more valuable, not to mention advantageous in it's current unmolested format! Thanks for all the kind comments on the new car chaps. Recognising that a 3 series isn't barge-tastic, I'll try not to bore you all with my discoveries as I play with it, but I have appreciated being able to buy a new car at a hefty discount and without paying tax. In a serendipitous coincidence the garagiste tells me that the Fiat 124 Spider passed its various tests today; major result!

Is the SLC being auctionned CdG? And how long until the unrolling for the new Lexus owner?!
News is expected early next week and the Lexus's new owner will be free to post away once it's in his possession. The decision on what happens to the SLC will be made after a bit of an assessment about the options, with it being sent to auction being one of them. Once the UK-bound cars are back and sorted it'll be time to thank those that have offered or provided much-appreciated and very thoughtful assistance with my little car conundrum over the past few weeks. This thread is a nice little collective of Losers.

L322 beards, is a nearly 200k miles TD6 a good idea or not. Specifically this one

Assuming the wind deflectors can be removed and a new gearbox is a good thing then what could possibly go wrong etc.

No, regardless of condition, the TD6 is a very boring and not particularly quiet lump to sit behind.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164973946254?_trkparms=...

I can't remember the criteria of S80 that was being looked at but do these look any good?
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202104241...
Petrol, £3590 and interesting colours.
For £20 more, a D5 with what seems a decent spec.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202107134...
I'm sure when I had a V70, with the D5 engine, it needed a cambelt change at 90,000 miles, so it would be worth checking if it's been done.

The later dark one I keep looking back to, seems really nice but the MOT is only until November '21. Whilst others I've seen are Apr/May/June 2022. Also seems to have a fridge in the boot, kinda defeats my goal of practicality. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202104241...

The red petrol is tempting, probably would have taken a look if closer, about a 2.5 hour drive away. I was kinda set on a D5 but the petrol would allow driving into the ULEZ on occasion come October and the sub £500 tax bracket.
Spent a bit of time today researching the bluetooth handsfree and streaming options. There is the GROM unit or using the AUX socket with a bluetooth transmitter/receiver. The later probably fine for music, not so much calling.
Not sure if the prices are reasonable, seem to be all over the place on the various sites.

A good day then, BM.
Excellent news bollie. This was rather magnificent looking, too. S650 Maybach. Unlikely to come into thread budget, any time soon.
I think someone was looking for a Jeep type car the other day.
Here's the perfect vehicle.
All the economy of a 5 litre engine but with the noise and smell of of diesel, what's not to like?

(I'm sure they're just checking the screen wash in this picture)

honestly in my never ending barge hunt, i've started looking at VITO/VIANOs instead of SUVs /M class/G class- the height of them is the biggest factor - the thought of being able to wheel in my 2 bikes down the side, dog on the 2 middle seats with factory window tints, comfy up front leather .....
problem is finding one that not moon miles and not a million miles away.
friday barge allowance all used up here i think :

I know that V8s are probably the way to go wiith L322s... ...but, just this year we sold TD6 which we had in family since it was new (late 2002, nearly 200k miles) and it was far from a bad car. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164973946254?_trkparms=...

Regarding the engine, it is noisy and really not that powerfull, but ours never had any engine related issues (even though it was mapped), it was still on its original turbo, original chains etc., we only changed oil and filters regularly. Also, there is no DPF on early models, so one less thing to go wrong. The fuel consumption was not that bad either.
Also I think that the earlier cars are less prone to rust issues (if they weren't crashed or poorly maintained), our was only starting to rust in the typical rear arch spot but no rust elsewhere.
The issues we had were mainly with the air suspension, some random electrical gremlins, battery drain. Oh and the gearbox went when the car had 100k miles but after rebuild it has been working well ever since..
Problem is that early L322s are old cars now, so even the good ones are starting to have issues like every other older car - rust, chassis (all the bushes etc.), electrical issues...
I'm not sure about this particular one but a clean TD6 still can be quite a nice car with reliable engine (if prized correctly). The V8s are probably better in other areas but the V8 diesels can have their own problems (DPFs, EGR, turbos...).
Anyway, when looking at old L322s you need to be always very careful

Thank you for your detailed reply. Looking at the MOT history and there is nothing too horrific, mainly worn bushes at different corners of the car.Regarding the engine, it is noisy and really not that powerfull, but ours never had any engine related issues (even though it was mapped), it was still on its original turbo, original chains etc., we only changed oil and filters regularly. I would be buying it with no good reason other than it could come in handy on some holidays later in the year.

Consensus is naturally (and rightly) that a 3-er (ugh, soz) isn't a barge, but that it does have an ugly face.
Too early and too wet to make much of a judgement, but already a big shout-out for Head Up Display, which has already fallen into the category of 'How have I ever managed without this...?'
Congrats and commiserations! The new BM looks excellent, I actually quite like that shape, and you can't argue with the useful tech like HUD etc.Too early and too wet to make much of a judgement, but already a big shout-out for Head Up Display, which has already fallen into the category of 'How have I ever managed without this...?'
Glad it all worked out in the end, although I must selfishly admit I was hoping I'd be needed
