We got back from a week in Devon yesterday, where the new (to me) S210 ran virtually faultlessly....even the air con worked!
And even more surprisingly, even HQ was impressed with it. Although rather idiotically she suggested if this car works so well, why would I need the E55....

Nearly 600 miles all in, and it averaged over 60mph and 40mpg. Which, with a roof box and bikes on the back and fairly loaded, I'm very happy with.
There's something a bit rattly/tired/loose on the front suspension somewhere but you only notice it on rutted roads and there's a bit of wobble in the steering wheel at erm higher cruising speeds.
Other than than a decent drive and holiday....I felt sorry for the poor buggers going south on the M5 yesterday. It looked like it was going to be a long day for them.
Slightly off topic but I'd like to ask about the roof box. Does it make much noise and what brand/model is it if you know?

I'm not quite sure what to make of it, or the seller, tbh. Silver with black alloys and a black interior is an unappealing aesthetic combo for me whilst the 'I'm an enthusiast' plus 'the errors don't bother me' plus the 'don't really need to sell' narrative is a little unconvincing, certainly with the lurid descriptions of the car as 'The Beast'. It has had the rear mufflers removed, which is interpreted as a growl but from personal experience is a deeply unappealing drone within the cabin at motorway cruising speeds, coupled with a loss in power.

EDIT: I wonder whether the seller will pop up as per the ML63 a few months ago and give me scorn the benefit of his feedback.
Interesting all those wires dangling in the pic of the open tailgate.
Mot history not impressive
Having another ganders, more undeclared things stand out.

Possible dink on the osr arch

On odd square discoloured patch on the nsr panel

You missed the ding/dent in the OSF wheel arch too. Looks like a dog, rather than a beast.
Well spotted, looks like the nsf

My old man has the upgraded system in his F Type R (I can't remember if it's Bowers and Wilkins or Bang and Olufsen) but that's a very good system. Cost several £k mind. Not the vest I've heard but certainly up there!

What no-one else but me knows at this moment is that the 1973 Mercedes SLC, which is part of the movement plan, is currently a 1.5T non-starting static ornament in my garage.
Somewhat unusually for me, I have proved rather less inept than usual and have solved this problem. Fingers crossed that the rest of it all goes according to plan.
I once whiled away a few hours sat beside the A14 (never a good look at the best of times) whilst my fellow motorcyclist tried in vain to restart his bike after we had stopped for fuel. Eventually he gave up and called the AA. It was only whilst waiting for them that he remembered that he had to disable the immobiliser before the bike would start.

Just saying.....
CDG you never said you rode motorbikes too smile lol

If that's a small convertible what is an MX5?
A slightly smaller small convertible. What am I missing?

I realise that an SC isn't exactly an Elise, but I can't think what else you'd call it?
It certainly a small car with a decent sized v8

While I'd love to take the credit for the Meridian system, I literally just drove the cars around and talked to people about how good it was and why....

I think the F Type would be Meridian, at least the first version was. There were different levels of system, apparently the flagship system in the Range Rover was amazing, although I did really like the system in the Evoque, it was the best bit about the car.

Must admit I love the idea of a big estate car. I'll probably get one next, or an SUV, when I replace the LS460, whenever that may be!
Mr Dinosaur, do you have a reader's thread for your Lex? That cheese Bollidemichael suggested I try before bed last night did strange things, including a vague vision of you upgrading the ICE in it.

The only thing to watch for on any D5 is the timing belt changes, requiring ALL pulleys and tensioners to be replaced at the same time - have heard horror stories of the timing belt being replaced, then a short while later, the alternator belt tensioner letting go, spitting the belt out into the timing belt and pop goes the engine....
After my Alfa's I'm quite used to cam belt changes and the Volvo Snow garages seem quite reasonable but will have to confirm what's included, with the Alfa's it was belt and water pump, stay safe. Thanks for the heads up, I looked into it further and found the aux belt is often forgotten and can be a nightmare too if it fails.

And the core plug on older D5s - was the death of my S80 - started leaking oil onto the clutch and buggered that. Quite a job to fix.
The versions of D5 I'm looking at 2007+ don't seem to suffer from the core plugs but will have a particle filter.

Below is a candidate, although MOT history show's subframe corrosion, not sure how serious it is, maybe just surface. My Alfa's post 1998 had very little rust and well protected from the factory so expect a Swedish designed Volvo to be even more resilient.

Assume it was yourself raised same issue on Volvo owners forum, not seen corrosion mentioned before regarding the S80 , plus am taking delivery of this baby Tuesday week

I have just now trawled through 70 odd Gumtree ads for cars aged 2006- 2009 under £3k and found 4 mentions of subframe corrosion in roughly 35 cars MOT histories, so not endemic but worth bearing in mind, only one mention the front subframe.

Also saw this phrase, ....

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

  • Vehicle has reached an age where all components are corroded **
Not exactly sure what it truly means!

Rather idiotically, I am thinking that the E55 must be surplus to requirements if this has already assumed family duties..?
Indeed it does..... Anyway, have you ever shared details of the E55 on these pages Mr mondayo. I have them as an alert on AT but seem few and far between recently.

Just to shed an opinion on this, we have a Kamei 510 roofbox that goes on the 9-5 Aero etsate for holidays and I honestly only really hear it when it is windy.

Other than that, I was shocked how quiet it was

Thanks for sharing your research, most pragmatic and reassuring.

What’s the Volvo forum you mentioned? Might be valuable if all goes well with a S80. edit: found the post you meant https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/

Looking forwards to reading about your on Tuesday wink
Which spec did you go for?
Any plans to add Bluetooth music streaming?

Barge-life. The next chapter in the Lexus tale saw the poor transporter driver loading the barge and the classic in the midst of an impressive storm.

The Mercedes went with it too.

The poor fellow was absolutely sodden. Obviously my pictures were taken from a nice dry vantage point, but I had at least given him a brew beforehand.

I am now officially barge-less.

Consensus is naturally (and rightly) that a 3-er (ugh, soz) isn't a barge, but that it does have an ugly face.

In slight mitigation, it is in (so-called) Luxury trim and old-man spec. No tints, comfort settings and with brown interior (which is darker than it looks here, and is closer to the door trim than the seat pic).

Too early and too wet to make much of a judgement, but already a big shout-out for Head Up Display, which has already fallen into the category of 'How have I ever managed without this...?'

Love the interior colours. Some well placed yellow screw heads and you have a CDG personalised plate!

If you need to super size, then surfbox.de do some great boxes.

I got one partly for the volume, but mainly for the length for windsurfing kit.

It's also been great fir camping
