Which new credit card?
Discussion
My current Avios credit card ends this month, it’s a Lloyds Avios. I see on Martin Lewis’ site Amex do some good ones to continue with Avios (I have 80,000 miles now) but I’ve heard Amex isn’t widely accepted.
I was aiming to get to 120,000 Avios to get a return trip to Japan in at some point.
Anyone advice what I should do?

Whoever told you that is talking nonsense. Sure you come across the odd place which doesn't accept it, but that is the rare occasion.Just don't ask if they accept it as they will default to "no" and instead present it as a contactless payment on Apple Pay or the Android equivalent so they can't see what sort of card it is.

It's no nonsense in my experience, but it is getting better. Only a couple of years ago Lidl accepted AMEX. Screwfix don't.Just don't ask if they accept it as they will default to "no" and instead present it as a contactless payment on Apple Pay or the Android equivalent so they can't see what sort of card it is.
But you can link into PayPal instead.

Sure there is the odd place like Screwfix/B&Q but can you name any other major UK retailer who doesn't accept Amex.

I just want one with good old-fashioned cashback each year, not stupid 'points' for things I don't want and will probably be discontinued anyway.
I use a John Lewis Card, I get a few £ worth of vouchers a year which I can spend in Waitrose, not a lot but better than nothing and better than pretty useless Airmiles. . PF62 said:

You say this but I know of someone who has only an AMEX card and its a standing joke that we usually have to cover his tab as a fair number of local places won't take the card. I have heard this straight from the staff before someone suggests its a clever ploy to avoid paying...(although we wonder if he carries only the AMEX for said reason). Yup.
Link it to PayPal and ta-da, that’s near enough all online purchases covered.
For in person stuff I find about 5% of my spend doesn’t go through AmEx.
There’s little need to ask if they accept it anymore, most the time the card terminal tells you as it’ll show the VISA, MasterCard and then AmEx logos.
Customer service is excellent too.

The free BA amex card is now a bit rubbish as the companion voucher can only be used for economy seats. They are increasing the fee on the paid card from £195 to £250 from September.
...and I understand changing the seats you can use it against in Club, meaning availability may increase.....Evanivitch said:
