RE: Neverending two-car story | PH Footnote
Discussion
Couldn't do the two car garage thing as Porsche wouldn't sell me the car I wanted (thank God I had a lucky escape). So I'm a three car boy.....
BMW 530d Xdrive to do all the mundane day to day stuff with the grandkids at 45-50mpg.
R172 Mercedes SLK55 AMG for the NA V8, 420 bhp, noise and convertible stuff for the summer that the missus loves.
Then a Toyota GR Yaris CP for the full fat drivers car, manual, low gearing, special purpose....oh and as it's a hatch, can do the dirty stuff down to the tip.
The BMW is due to go next year, and an EV is looking strong as a replacement, the other two will be around for a long while yet I suspect.

That is a very nice threesome. BMW 530d Xdrive to do all the mundane day to day stuff with the grandkids at 45-50mpg.

I'd love another V8 for sure.
1 month old Hyundai Ioniq pure electric. Do it right, no hybrid.
Gets me to work.
Lots of tech makes it interesting in understanding a new way to drive.
Monaro CV8, cat back from new for weekend and long distance pleasure and thrills.
How's that for a balanced brace of motors!
(Perhaps I should call it the Ironic!)

Lowish sales of the A110 in the UK have nothing to do with the gearbox, no matter what the vocal "real drivers" club likes to say. If it was available with a manual they'd find another reason not to buy it.
Probably. From an actual driving perspective, though, god the car would be so much more appealing with a manual box and a small, musical NA V6.

One of these cars will get to 60 in under 6 seconds.
One of these cars will carry the entire family and all their stuff for hours at a time in complete comfort.
The other one is an elise.
Didn't know you had an Elise - whet a great combo. About as different as you could get.One of these cars will carry the entire family and all their stuff for hours at a time in complete comfort.

I have a leaf too. Just to cover all bases. The Elise might be going (after 12 years). My commute has changed and it’s just not getting used. If it was a 2+2 it would be used for days out.
Evora then.

How much weight and cost would that add?And before you say the manual would be lighter, have a look at the Morgan Plus 4 - the manual is heavier in that, as Alpine have said one would be in the A110. That V6 doesn't sound like one that's in production either.
And once you've added that extra weight you'd need bigger tyres, firmer suspension, a bigger fuel tank for the same range, and the spiral continues. You end up with something much like a Boxter/Cayman - I'm absolutely not saying that's not a great car, but it's a world (and a few hundred kilos) away from what the Alpine is. Could they hit the emissions requirements with an NA V6? Certainly in France it would have been hit with a massive hike in their road tax equivalent.
I like a good manual, and I like V6s. But I don't think either would have enhanced the A110 - they've have just changed it. I basically ended up choosing between an Evora GT400 (manual, S/C V6) and the Alpine, and overall the Alpine was even more fun to drive.
I'd rather have the thing in my garage (or, better, be in it enjoying it) than be sad that I don't drive something that doesn't exist. The Alpine, as it exists, is brilliant, and personally I'm just happy that it, the 718, the GR Yaris, the GT86/BRZ, MX5, Supra, F-Type and all the ones I've forgotten (sorry) are here for us to have fun in. For every single one there are things I could say "it'd be nice/better if...", but I'd rather get on with enjoying whichever one I can. If it wasn't a slightly scummy thing to do (given that I'm in no mood or financial position to change), I'd book test drives in all of those just so I could try them. It's unfashionable to say so, but I think we live in brilliant times for fun cars.
A hot hatch and a sports car is a great 2 car garage. Not sure I would personally go Alpine and Fiesta as they are a bit too modern/remote for my liking but I see the appeal.
When I started driving I had a Caterham and 205 GTI. Loved them both.
Of course as we all know, 2 cars isn't enough to cover enough bases but that's for another time..

Brilliant original article. After very many years of being a lurker and enjoying a lot of what I read in the comments, it gave me the push to register for the forum.
I'd agree with others who have said that Dan has made this really hard for himself by not having a manual fun car. Having to have a manual big car really limits his scope to an older car (not a bad thing) or a pick up truck (which most on here would consider a bad thing).
Here's my fleet:
This one for winter, mountain biking, towing daughter's horse around, family trips, tips runs etc. Very easy to criticise but after nearly 4 years and 32,000 miles of wafting along (er, admittedly at 16mpg)....I love it:
And this one as my daily driver for work and fun. This is a relatively new addition for me. I'm fully of admiration for it but not quite in love with it yet. It needs the correct tyres fitting and the suspension rebuilding and setting up first.
