RE: Mega Cayenne Coupe bags lap record

As a petrolhead, it troubles me that I should be impressed and excited by this, but in reality, I just don't give a toss. If I dig really deep there's some respect for the engineering involved, but that is really about it.
This pretty much sums up my point of view as well. Maybe there may be a slight flicker of interest had it not been an SUV doing the lap but even then it would have been tiny at best. 2Btoo said:

I doubt any actual buyers could give even the most mildly airborne turd about it, let alone anyone that doesn't actually want a fast SUV.
It's almost entirely willy waving by engineers who've somehow managed to convince their marketing department that it's a worthwhile endeavour.

Oh dear. I think I finally have to admit I am no longer interested in cars.
This is an incredible achievement but I don’t care.
I don’t particularly want this or any other mega heavyweight tech fest of a car, however good they are.
Maybe if I was 17 but I don’t think so.
I’m waiting for a new car that is genuinely beautiful, pretty, elegant? Just desirable but not too complicated and nice and light.
Oh and because I’m no longer 17, comfortable too.
Perhaps no longer being bothered about cars coincides nicely with the EV revolution. I know I will never love an EV the way I loved my old Alfas, Lancias or current VX220.

It's an impressive feat. Unfortunately this is more about marketing than anything else. Ring times are a great indication of a cars performance but No one is ever taking their SUV to the track.
Here is my mate on a trackday in his X5M. Was quicker than all the hot hatch stuff. If you can get the link below to open then it shows him overtaking and sodding off from a modded 308GTI/R whatever they are these days.

So it's Porsche vs Audi vs Lamborghini?
They're all owned by the same parent, and built on the same platform. Whilst the engineering is undoubtedly impressive, they're having a war with themselves to get column inches.
I think it was Piech that said internal competition is the best competition, or something along those lines. They're all owned by the same parent, and built on the same platform. Whilst the engineering is undoubtedly impressive, they're having a war with themselves to get column inches.

I have the latest Cayenne S and whilst it amuses my children when I push the Sports button and get some overboost in a straight line, honestly tracking such a high gravity heavy and large car would destroy brakes and tyres double quick for not much, if any, pleasure. As a one-off exercise though, of course why not.If you can get the link below to open then it shows him overtaking and sodding off from a modded 308GTI/R whatever they are these days.

You definitely have that mixed up. The marketing determines the engineering, not the other way round!
Marketing/customer demand might drive the demand for the fast SUV in the first place yes but you can almost guarantee it'll be the engineers who are leading them up the garden path with using ring lap times as a metric.Trust me I was having dinner with two top dynamics engineers last night who have developed fast SUV's for different manufacturers and they were both having a good old willy waving session about whose was fastest around the ring and who had cheated the least with geo settings and track tyres

This is very silly. This is not how Cayennes are used.
They should go for a record for "Longest journey between toilet stops." or "Longest conference call on speakerphone without waking the kids in the back." or "Longest drive without removing an elbow from the arm rest."
Other categories: They should go for a record for "Longest journey between toilet stops." or "Longest conference call on speakerphone without waking the kids in the back." or "Longest drive without removing an elbow from the arm rest."
"Most spaces parked over".
"Fastest time between speed bumps".
"Closest to the school gates".
i was following a Cayenne turbo s across Derbyshire in my 997s the other evening and it was impressively rapid over very challenging roads. when i pulled level with it in :Leek. it was a middle aged woman with child seats. i think the electronics in these cars do a lot of the driving.
