RE: 2021 Audi RS3 gets drift mode, will do 180mph

and it's worth noting that this car won't actually oversteer
Don't get me wrong, you can make it oversteer by arriving at a bend about 50% too fast, and giving it the most almightly bung on the way in, and then having about 3 Heathrow runway widths of clear tarmac to gather it all back up again, sure, but on the road, er nope. It's got far to much mass up front, and unless it can also disconnect it's front axle (hint: it can't) then all it'll do is push the front out.
To drift, remember, you need to OVERSPEED the rear axle, not overtorque it......
Good demo of those physics here:
Autocar_will_it_drift_golfR
Because it can't overspeed the rear axle, it cannot continuously generate more tyre slip at the rear, hence the tyre lateral performance is simlpy split via the mass distribution, and hence, with the engine transversly upfront, it'll just push the nose out. You'll note in that video, when he juuuust manages to introduce some weight transfer momentum oversteer in FIRST ie at trailing throttle, then the "drift" system can juuust manage to keep the rear sliding for a few seconds, but really as soon as net positive torque is applied, the front and rear slip ratios equalise and the car comes out of the drift because there is no longer excess slip only at the rear
I thought they'd do better on a skid pad, the A45 was terrible. Are they the same under normal conditions? What exactly does drift mode do anyway? All the safety assists are off before you can select it, is it just the willingness to send a bit more power to the rear?Don't get me wrong, you can make it oversteer by arriving at a bend about 50% too fast, and giving it the most almightly bung on the way in, and then having about 3 Heathrow runway widths of clear tarmac to gather it all back up again, sure, but on the road, er nope. I also feel that a large market for these cars (relatively young, flashy, likes speed etc) are jumping into Tesla M3Ps, so im not entirely sure who would buy these anymore.
eventually that'll become the case but atm the tesla is too quiet and doesn't have the drug dealer pedigreesteve S owner said:
Pointless really. How many will ever do 180mph? So its purely for bragging rights for bores who like to brag of such things.
I expect most of the German owned ones to do 180 mph.Germany has nine neighbouring countries, so quite a few registered
in those places will also, I suspect.
With so much power, the acceleration from let's say 100 mph
to 150 mph will be pretty good, too.
Spectacularly pointless in the UK, however. Just a way to visit petrol
stations more often, rather than get anywhere any faster than anyone else.
Wow, not much love for the RS3 then.
I currently have a B9 RS4 and was contemplating moving to an RS3 as it's a bit more compact and has that 5 pot sound. Sounds like I'd be universally hated at any future Pistonheads meet so might have to stick with the RS4.
The engine is utterly brilliant and the fact you can get it in a hatchback should be applauded is my opinion although I do admit they do seem to attract a certain bunch that my grandfather would class as "unsavouries"

Feck me, is this really an enthusiasts site?! In a time of a relentless stampede of electric soulless floats, the release of a 400 bhp 5 cylinder ice car gets all the grumps out. Audi can’t win, previous one was said to be dull handling, maybe understeer on the limit and now they’ve made it more dynamic the hate continues! The golf r has gone down well on the handling stakes vs old, i expect this one to smash it as same gear.
Drift mode had to be included cos their main rival the A45s has it. Not sure why all the alarm the focus rs had it years ago, doubt many owners ever used it.
Nice that the power wars have stopped, plus this might just sound ok as they’ve managed to give the golf a good sound with a few pops and bangs so hopefully better with the the 5pot and sports exhaust
Where do I sign (pending 7 numbers)

No longer see the point of cars this fast when we have a 70 limit and lower on interesting roads and the car is boring to drive. In south London every fiesta ST, Audi s, RS and BMW 135’s are driven by complete muppets who do not understand a 30 limit. Darwin is coming for them.
Interesting. I live in SE London too. Black M140i launched from a pelican crossing about 30 minutes ago up to about 65mph (Based on the engine sound, gear changes, and visuals. Fiesta ST overtook me on a 20 road, on the wrong side of an Island, even though I was going 25.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
