Road trip Starting from Santander Spain
Discussion
Just looking at getting some driving in with most of Europe on a no go, thought about getting the Ferry to Santander and going into northern Spain.
Other than flying into Murcia and Barcelona that all i have done in Spain.
Looking at the Map i was thinking going West across the coast, any recommendations for places to visit / stay in the upper range and also sports car friendly ?

A good overnighter after the crossing is Castilla Termal Monastery of Valbuena just outside of Valladolid, not too far for your 1 day so you can get a good nights rest then crack on the following day.
They have a private car park outside the walls which is safe enough, but if you ask they'll let you park up inside.
Loads of great roads and places to visit in Northern Spain, but if you're heading west depending on how far south you are going to travel, another great hotel is the Algarve Conrad, fantastic restaurants and sports car friendly (barriered mine off while it was outside ).

I did similiar in 2019 though headed south from Santander. I would like to go west and down in to Portugal next time. I looked at a ferry this year but at £1,500 (£600 in 2019) that's more than I am prepared to pay.
As above the Picos are really beautiful but I have heard good things about Galicia and the west.

Picos de Europa is a must see with great driving roads in northern Spain and is right on the doorstep of Santander.
Give the region at least a couple of days.
Agree.Give the region at least a couple of days.
There is a Parador in the middle of the Picos park in Fuente De. It's (for a Parador) a bit modern but the location is magnificent. In general, you can't go wrong booking Parador hotels.
[Aside] I stayed there on a mass Lotus trip in 2001. I was at the top of Fuente De when one of our group told me that the US had been attacked.

My son and I hiked and rough camped through the Picos at the start of his first solo Euro road trip. After 3 days living in the mountains a hot shower, a simple meal and bed in a Parador was just like paradise. There is a Parador in the middle of the Picos park in Fuente De. Good times.
We're looking to do a similar holiday in October. I've got a Michelin green guide and the drives in that are really good.
We did a drive through the Spanish side of the Pyrenees in 2012 and the roads were fabulous - empty, perfectly surfaced and stunning scenery. The towns were as pretty as a great Tuscan hilltop town but with hardly any tourists. Shame about the Focus estate hire car at the time so we are going to bring our car this time!
Jethro Bovingdon did a series on Motor Trend called Petrol head Planet with some great looking roads up there that we're going to try to find too. Via the Rioja region.

The French side is worth visiting too. The drive from from Perpignan through the Catalenes Park on the N116 and up into Andorra then down into Spain goes through some great scenery.
I found a post from a few years ago from a user "Zed 44". It looks like he's done a few trips to Spain and put together this map and dropped in this thread. Every road I zoom into street view on looks amazing.

We're going to do pretty much this but skip the West side and spend a few days in Logroño for Rioja tours and pintxos. And this restaurant / winery famous for mutton BBQ:

We did logrono after the bull run in Pamplona a few years ago , I can highly recommend the marques de murrieta Rioja tour . Book it in advance and take the option with food , it was 3 , 5 or 7 tastings , we took the 5 option and really enjoyed it . There was only the two of us in the private dining room with the estate chef and his sous chef prepping food for us to pair with the wines . https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1GuSpUQHQ...

The best advice I can give is take a taxi from your hotel , once the bottles are open you can drink as much of them as you can manage , obviously we didn’t drink the 5 bottles but it was a session.
Logrono itself is a pretty decent town too , Laurel Avenue is the tapas street if I remember correctly, but there’s loads of places .
I'm looking to do a UK trip across to Bilbao or Santander then across through the picos to northern Portugal and then looping back to the port perhaps via the Pyrenees. Don't want to be driving every minute of every day but want to drive the best roads in 911 992 4S
Anyone got any good routes or hotel recommends ?
What's to see whilst we are traveling?
Is this as good as doing the Black Forest and Switzerland/austria?
