WTF happened to bargain V8s ?!
Discussion
Haven't been on here for the last...... ~10 odd years. Motoring sort of went on hiatus.
Just thought, before I'm forced to buy something electric forever, I'd scratch the V8 itch.
It just never occurred to me I might have left it so long nothing really exists any more. I feel like someone's dad who talks about 'the good old days' but, 'back in my day' you could find a plethora of 'fun' cars for sub £3k.
Did I really sit in my arm chair and wait too long?!!

was sort of hoping someone would call me a numpty and point me in a direction I hadn't thought of. well, for bargain money.
I so flippantly turned down multiple cars in the (10 years ago) past, v8 barges, pony power etc.
massive facepalm that the period may be over. not quite sure how that passed by!

Certainly seems that way. I think with increased road tax costs, many older V8s ended up being sent to the scrapper.Just thought, before I'm forced to buy something electric forever, I'd scratch the V8 itch.

I remember back in 2006/7, there was an abundance of XJS HE V12s at pretty decent prices, no more than a couple of grand. Still wouldn't say no to one now.
Add on top of that the boom in car flippers buying and selling with with growth of the internet, everyone generally tightening their belts and these types of car becoming something of a rarity, and it has become far harder to find a bargain V8 or larger in the classifieds, although it seems that auction houses are the good places to peruse.
Autotrader, max £3k, min engine size 4.0
Audi A8, Grand Cherokee, Range Rover, Merc S500, Jag XJ/S-Type/XK8.
Basically everything 10+ years old and vaguely interesting started going up in value around 2012. I think you either need to get lucky, or put the budget up a bit, to find a good V8.

For a great V8 Experience you could do far worse the Rover SD1 3500.
It’s everything thankfully that the Rover 75 isn’t. For a car launched in 1976 it was so ahead of the time as regards styling and refinement.
Yeah, nice manual 3500 here, £2950, https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1347741 ...It’s everything thankfully that the Rover 75 isn’t. For a car launched in 1976 it was so ahead of the time as regards styling and refinement.
... oh wait a sec, "Last tax disc expired April 1994"
big fan, but only a £3k V8 if you're looking for a restoration project to occupy your time.

Really !!! I remember Dad having the badly made old slugs of a thing and him shaking his head , if ever there was a car worse than the one it replaced it was the SD1 the only improvement over the P 6 was it was bigger inside !!It’s everything thankfully that the Rover 75 isn’t. Other than that it was a poorly built Unreliable Porky lump with a cart axle ..

Yep agreed - those days are gone now. Those advertised at £8~9k nowadays mostly have pretty obvious work in store for the buyer and most presentable V12s are now somewhere in the teens with really nice examples (sometimes well) north of £20k. The 3.6 litre slant 6 can still be found a bit cheaper but they seem to be following the V12s in an upwards direction now.I always intended to buy one for £4-5k but never got round to it, so but seeing the writing on the wall having watched my Cerbera double in value since I sold mine, I just bought a V12 for just under £10k which seems below average money for a fairly decent condition car.
