I'd missed that this was rolling out in the UK - interesting and positive development in my view given the shift for people away from live TV, etc

The headline is misleading - in the detail it said just the Reading area.
Ah thank you

Actually I'm mistaken - and deleted post - it was iOS that will be tested on June 29 in Reading as a regional test. My bad.

I keep my mobile on silent most of the time because I use it to make calls out not receive, is this warning set up to still make a noise ?

In Sweden they have something like that but with sirens.

https://www.thelocal.se/20160905/whats-that-noise-...

It was started in 1931 and is tested occasionally.

Yes, it is not a text message, but a special type of network message that overrides silent mode

That can sod off.

Knowing the scope creep of this sort of thing it will end up being used to broadcast all sorts of crap that is totally irrelevant.

Wonder how long before someone presses the wrong button and causes mass panic LOL.

We have sirens up here, tested every Weds at 11am for the local fuel depot. I have been in this office for 15 years and I still look at my watch every time it goes off just to check!

It may be in Reading because it's the home of Three's core.

I wonder if you would get an alert even if your phone shows "no network" but is in fact talking to a network that you aren't a customer of.

They use them with some frequency in Ontario and I don't think they override silent mode, mine just vibrates a lot.

In Canada 4 years ago and this buzzed on my phone due to storm warning. British mobile, roaming turned off still worked. So I am surprised we have not used it sooner.

I just can’t take that guy seriously since he was swimming around inside an elephant’s fanny with Borat.

I experienced similar to look out for a missing child in the a couple of years back, I'm also amazed we've not had it sooner.

Bugger off with your eye rolls, let's see how this goes shall we?

I bet it ends up getting used for all kinds of stupidity.

Aside from that it has the potential to bloody intrusive, which is my main problem with it all.

If you read back to my earlier responses you will see that the over-riding of silent mode is my complaint.

The inevitable daft alerts and pointless "tests" will just add to it.

I remember them testing the air raid sirens in the early 80's that noise always made my skin crawl.
