Probably a double whammy of driver shortage and probably the entire motorcycling and older vehicle community using super unleaded to avoid the E10 (trying not to get into the facts or fiction of effect of E10)

Wonder if the increase in sales of super will lead to rise in prices above non super unleaded, or (I doubt it) a drop due to economy of scale
The ammount of people changing to super from normal will be a small blip in sales considering normal will likely be 90% of alll sales

Or stop being a big softy and use E10.
This must be a contender for the most idiotic post on PH. Well done.
Why? Seems like loads of folk are panicking about using it in cars perfectly fine for it, switching to premium then it all sells out

It’s more than that though

You’ve overlooked staycations - that demand never existed / normally 8 weeks in summer of lower demand not this year on top of all other issues.

As for price falls…. 2020 clearly was an unrepeatable situation & yes I filled up at £1 a ltr ish amazing

I haven't had any issues buying Tesco Momentum 99RON for £1.409 a litre of late which is only E5 (for now), but the supply problem seemed to relate to diesel around here - thankfully!

Sainsburys Superplus is only 97RON and while Esso/Shell/BP alternatives may be as good when it comes to pricing you just need to bend over and get shafted!

In my case the car I'm wanting to fill up is a 1963 Riley One-Point-Five.

This is very worrying I filled my supercharged Monaro up yesterday at a shell garage with E5 before taking it for the MOT, I noticed most of the E5 pumps were closed bar 2.(thankfully the Monaro is not my daily weekend fun only)

When I was at the MOT station without prompting him, my tester went on to mention E10 was causing all sorts of problems in various cars, he had this reliable information from his friends in the trade.

My biggest worry in all this (I really hope it's a driver shortage) is they will stop making E5 without any warning, the current E10 seems to have come from nowhere without any warning, and I am getting a little bit paranoid.

I use a tank of Super a week at the moment and not noticed any supply issues.

I think the OP has just been mislead by the staff at that particular petrol station. They probably have no idea when the next delivery of chewing gum is coming in either.

So 5% is fine but 10% will kill it?

The odd bit of E10 as a one off if E5 isn't available isn't going to dissolve your fuel system in a matter of hours.

You really should not be at all concerned about E10 in an American engine.

Again, could this thread be kept to current supply issues please?

There are other threads in which to debate the pros and cons of ethanol percentages and their effects.

Thank you.

Esso garage near Walthamstow was completely out of everything this morning but Shell in Islington had everything, including V Power.

Agree but we are talking about E5, thus I’d say 10% of people did originally use E5 , I’m saying more people are using it now say 2% of population, then that’s a 20% increase of E5 sold, and might be the reason for E5 to be out of stock. I think your statement was perhaps referring to my 2nd statement on economy of scale? If so yes full agreement, I wonder what the split actually is.

The Ethanol content now will breed more issues with understanding fuel, we had enough with the octane rating haha, people already claiming ethanol = octane rating (actually some what true in the UK atm)

I’d be very sure that super petrol will certainly be available on motorway service stations (£1.90 a ltr or more hahahaha)

That’s what I was thinking. I researched a while back whether my Monaro would be ok with E10 and I’m sure I discovered it would be fine.

Here’s a screenshot from the Aus Government compatibility checker..

The debate over the pros & cons will be in the context of long term use. There isn't a supply issue if E5 can be used occasionally.

Anyway, no shortage of V Power at Shell Allestree or Esso 99 Markeaton, both South Derbyshire.

Yeah I would imagine that's a few fill ups of E10 should be ok.

Is super fuel going to E10 at some point?

I went to our local Tesco (Chesterfield) to fill the Riley with Momentum E5 99RON this evening - except there was none. Every Momentum pump was 'Not In Use'.

The kiosk staff said they had no idea when they'd have a delivery and when asked where else might have some (imagining they might know about supplies at nearby Tesco filling stations) the suggestion was, "Sainsbury's..."

Is this a widespread shortage or was I just unlucky? We're starting a ten-day driving tour of Wales tomorrow, some fuel would make it easier...
I filled up with Shell 99 yesterday (Anglesey). There were no obvious supply problems there. Other local stations with 98+ seem ok too.

I was under the impression E10 is only an issue in older cars that aren't used too much and the fuel just sits in it.
