I know it's hard to diagnose faults without driving a car but I would appreciate some thoughts regarding a knocking/rattle from the front left over uneven road surfaces in my 2006 Clio.

I took it to one garage who changed the front two tyres and then suggested it may be the left hand side top mount bearing, but they didn't have time to fix it.

So I took it to another garage who changed the rear two tyres and the left hand side top mount bearing, but the rattle is still there. Oh gawd.

Looking at the first garage's report, they mentioned that the front brake calliper and carrier may be noisy.

I did a rattle/knocking test today and when I brake, it doesn't happen.

Do you think this could be the calliper/carrier problem?

I am already down quite a few bob and can't afford to replace parts that won't definitely cure it.

Any thoughts welcome. Thanks.

Although I don't consider my car (1998 Volvo V70 T5) a shed, the purchase price just about fits into the shed budget (£1,750). Car is currently in the garage for a service and investigation into some suspension knocks. They have just called to say my total bill will be circa £1,600, which on the face it, seems daft to spend that much given the value (which is probably closer to £3,500) but the way i'm looking at, is it's an interesting car, rare and I could go out and buy a £1,000 shed and have similar issues, maybe. That said, it's a huge amount of money! The body work I was planning on doing might have to wait...
Jesus, £1600 is a lot for P80 suspension... even replacing all of it, that seems a bit spendy!

I think you should cut your losses. When can I collect it?

If said rattle goes away when you brake then it'd hint as something brake related... maybe a anti-rattle clip gone missing or the caliper loose on the mounts or the back shoes rattling around. Either way, I'd avoid firing the parts cannon at it until it's properly diagnosed. Or alternatively, turn the radio up louder and crack on until it fails to proceed. Or perhaps fails to stop. Tis the sheddy way!

First thing I`d check / change would be front drop links.
Cheap and easy.
When they go you get these exact symptoms.

Yep drop links or bottom wishbone, pug206/clio/saxo go through them like wildfire for some reason, changed mine last year and starting to knock again on rough surfaces, cheap but a PITA.

I should add that because I'm lazy I only did the passenger side knowing full well that I would be doing the other side pretty soon, only myself to blame.

Sorted the vectra's leaking injector. Patience, a crow bar and engine compression eventually freed it. A good clean and a new copper washer and it was back together.

So been without a second/commuting car for a month and I can't do it. So been looking around for a 2nd car for me.

New career/job means I've been approved for car finance. Never had any car finance/lease before. credit scores always being in the ditch. Had a look around trying to keep it sensible, man maths and trying to tick a lot of boxes etc.

1) Octovia TDI estate , 2015, 85k on 9500 on monfliees. Loaded with optional extras, nice colour, clean car hpi clear full history etc. Free insurance for a year. I chickened out not feeling comfortable with the finance and 9.5k.

2) 5door Aygo 1.0, 2017, 40k miles £4k. About £100 a month for 5 years. A cheap car for work duties not bad no? Still can't do it.

Guess my previous shed experience rubbed off me. Not giving a crap about the car, sleeping better, enjoying life, savings every month etc .

So now looking at Avensis Diesel Estates at around the £1500 mark on used market. Hoping to get the newer shape.

I think am officially a Shedist for a while now. Sorry car finance companies, not yet. I think I will be a Shedist now until a C63 6.2 AMG becomes a realistic proposition. That day all my money/shed life is going out the window (after house purchase of course)

You'll probably still be a sheddist then, too, with the Merc for fun. My friends lad has just done similar with a very tidy 350Z (even cheaper than your Merc)
He worked out if he kept his polo for winter use etc & a bit of commuting, with the 350 for fun, it works out cheaper than just running the 350. Man maths at it's best.

You can try the caliper and caliper holder screws: they can create rattle.
My bet is on the lower suspension arm bushes.

Is it a trustworthy garage ? You can get other quotes. They might know you like the car and charge a lot...

Yeah i've been going there for around 5 years and do trust them. I know they're not the cheapest, but being Volvo specialists in my opinion means it's the best place to take it. They rang back and have actually knocked £150 off the price. That said, i've asked for a full breakdown of parts, and will price it up.

Holy Grail found and bought yesterday.

V70 163 bhp Euro3 D5, with a 6 speed manual gearbox.

Oh Yes!!.

Surprisingly late for a Euro 3 on a 2007 plate. This pleases me no end.

I had the 163 and manual in an XC90 and found it absolutely awful which was odd seeing as it was such a great combo in the V70. I am quite jealous

I guess in these times where £150 an hour labour rates are banded about, racking up a £1600 bill for a suspension refresh wouldn't be too hard. That said, they're quite easy old things to work on but if you're not that way inclined then it's a bit catch 22.

No DPF, I think the flywheel is solid, the injectors are solenoid, and it's about as good as it gets. Even better, it has a file of history about 3 inches thick, the belts have been done, the tyres are newish and matching, the seats are not badly worn, and it just has the air of a car that has lead a sheltered and loved life.
And I paid 800 quid for it.
Complete bargain in these times of a 52 plate 1.0 Yaris fetching £2k.

Great find. They were around the £2k mark about 18 months ago. It was not easy to find a decent manual.
