Toyota GR86 sells out in 40 minutes

We said the GT86 replacement was good. You didn't need telling twice

So there we are. Of course we knew people would be excited about Toyota's latest rear-drive coupe - the GR86 is, after all, the follow-up to a flawed masterpiece, and it arrives in the goodwill wake of the intensely popular GR Yaris - but we didn't expect this. Having confirmed a very reasonable starting price of £29,995 just last week, and officially going on sale on Wednesday, the UK's production quota is already gone.

A spokesman for Toyota confirmed it: "[The] GR86 went on sale at 10am. The UK's entire current allocation of cars was sold out in a little under 40 minutes." This will not be news to anyone with their nose pinned to the appropriate forum thread (the pricing story is at 867 comments and counting) where PHers were quick to announce their dismay once the chance to click 'Buy' on Toyota's website was replaced with an offer of a place on the waiting list - but for those of us slightly less invested, it was a surprise.

Now, it should be noted that we're not talking about a colossal production run by any means, and doubtless Toyota's announcement that the car will only be sold for a limited period has helped piqued buyer interest - but, nevertheless, finding a customer for every car almost immediately when you're allocating hundreds rather than a handful is impressive going. Especially when you consider that its predecessor (a car that the new GR86 still mimics in many fundamental ways) was never a smash hit.

Obviously the speed at which the sold out notice went up suggests that there will be plenty of disappointed would-be buyers out there (some of them potentially not even on PH) - and Toyota explained to us that all hope might not be lost if you were still keen enough to put your name down promptly even with the chance to leave a deposit gone.

"Customers who were not able to order on Wednesday have been offered the opportunity to join a waiting list in case of cancellations. That will be operated strictly against the time customers tried to order, so on a chronological basis."

For everyone else, we will have to cling to the notion that the UK's appetite for the GR86 is now so incontestable that Toyota will be forced to consider supplying more RHD cars to satisfy it. Certainly you can expect the appropriate people to be making the nation's business case based on Wednesday's performance. And if they need any help, we're more than happy to provide a follow-up to our GR Corolla petition. There are more than 800 names on that. How many more would be required to steer another cargo ship in our direction?

So let's get this right, you could reserve a car without a deposit being paid? I wonder how many of those who have done this will follow through with the order.

No, there was a £1000 deposit required to secure a car.

I am sure that the experience differs between countries. I contacted Toyota Switzerland last September. They assigned me a local dealership.

Pricing emerged in January and I sorted all the specifications and contractual elements then. The initial order opening date was 4th March but then that was pushed to the 30th March due to the red contrast interior trim option no longer being available.

Once the dealer could submit the order officially on 30th March it was a simple click on the dealership side.

To be found on a resellers site at a healthy above-list mark up soon...

Sub £30k is EP3 money, adjusting for inflation. Naysayers be damned, it’s a bargain and the second one in as many years from Toyota.

I really hope Honda announce mid 30k price for the new Type R.

Well done to those true enthusiasts who bagged one for themselves to enjoy.

May the scalpers and speculators be plagued with a never-ending itch, right in the middle of their back where they can't reach it easily...

The pent-up demand for this can only bode well for Toyota's recent return to form as a performance car brand. I'm very keen to see what they'll come up with in future.

Relieved to have got my order in. First time buying a brand new car, too. Heart over head I guess. Very excited though smile

I know this will be considered cynical, but Toyota could put a GR badge on anything at the moment and the fanboys/speculators would foam at the mouth instantly. When the penny drops that this is a GR in name only, there will be plenty of allocations available. If that penny ever drops of course - there are a lot of non-car people suddenly into cars as investments. This isn't the one to invest in.

Until this car has 250 hp and 250 ft lb i dont see how exciting it can be, especially when you can pick up an mx5 for a lot less, it does look nice though.

Who'd have thought just a couple years ago that Toyota would produce 2 cars that everyone wanted, and allocations would sell out straight away?

GR Yaris
GR86.

I assume the same will happen with the GR Corolla.

Ay?

Needs more power then suggests a car with the same bhp/ton? Which is 'alot less' (£600) new? No doubt never driven either.

Sound PH logic.

Pleased for Toyota that this is proving popular, but a bit disappointed that its lifespan will be so short. Every new performance car feels like one step closer to the end at the moment, so any excitement is tinged by sadness for me.

What makes a car an actual GR, rather than a GR in name only?

Given the brand has only been around a short time and there have only been three models so far (two 4WD hot hatches and a RWD sports car), it's not like the brand is particularly well defined.

There is more to cars than straight line performance.

I'm not as convinced about the Corolla. Unless I'm mistaken, and could well be as I haven't checked, the Corolla isn't a homologation special. Also, the Yaris is very compact and is the only car I can think of which is that small with so much power and an interesting drive-train. The Corolla competes on a like-for-like basis with quite a few other cars which is likely to go against it.

Weird how no one is queuing round the block for the 320d though… it’s almost like it doesn’t matter at all.
