RE: McMurty Automotive targets Goodwood hill record

The previous record was a 1998 Mclaren Mp4 13, I still think a modern F1 car would be faster.
Was very impressive by Max & borderline insane regardless.
No, it wasn't.Was very impressive by Max & borderline insane regardless.
It was the VW ID.R record that the McMurtry has taken the record from.
If you actually saw the F1 record run, you'd realise exactly how sketchy it was setting that time - that's why they're prevented from attempting one, not because they'd definetely be quicker. They're simply not suited to such a course, and the potential for something going wrong is simply too great.

Look at how much it is bouncing around...

It wasn't adapted for the course, you can make an F1 car handle better than that. It didn't even have soft hillclimb rubber on.It was the VW ID.R record that the McMurtry has taken the record from.

I would expect a top spec hillclimb car or an adapted for the hill F1 car would give this EV a run for it's money.

I recall Button driving a very recent F1 car, and he couldn't beleive how easy and stable it was to drive even in comparison to his 2009 Brawn. So with the right setup stability wouldn't be an issue, it's more that they are just too fast. Worth noting that Heidfeld's car isn't even running slicks, you can clearly see it's a treaded rain tyre before it sets off.Sway said:
It beat the time, but didn't hold the official record. That's why Nick was still being called the record holder today.Just like in circuit racing, lap records can only be set in the race, qualifying just gives you a track record.

Nah everyone knows ICE would be faster, hence they banned F1 cars and the like from running.
Even if it were.. it would be F all to do with the powetrain. More to do with tyres and aero. However, EVs have huge reserves of instant torque and power that can be controlled more precisely so they’re perfect for this kind of run. The McMurtry thing in particular is using massive ground effect (banned in F1) and a really small frontal area and slippery shape - F1 cars are slipppery but they’re open cockpit and the wheels create a lot of drag. To have 2000kg of downforce and a 1000bhp/tonne is pretty much unbeatable. That’s before the packaging and, weight and performance battery advances that come.
this / a watered down version of it is the first EV car that I think I would actually buy for the purpose of fun.
it just has so much personality to it for an electric car and looks super fun
I was actually scared though whilst watching it despite the skill of the driver, as it's just that fast!

Phenomenal. A PH’er spotted one on the road last year.

Agreed. Give me a fifth of the power, a bunch less aero and somewhere to stick my office bag - and I'd love something this small/light/fun as a commuter over the South Downs... it just has so much personality to it for an electric car and looks super fun

The problem with a car like this is where do you use it? It's too fast for track days, even for Audi diesel drivers.it just has so much personality to it for an electric car and looks super fun

It makes Formula E look like something from the ark and pretty pathetic by comparison.
It's unlikely it would meet regular race series rules because of the fan being movable aero, which is banned.

Indeed. The McMurty is a specialised weapon honed for exactly this kind of thing, and a F1 car is completely out of its element. That's not in any way a disparagement to F1 cars. Horses for courses.
