We are looking for a new works van, we'd like to go electric obviously, but what's out there? Any experience?

It would need to be at leats Transit size, but I believe it would take ages to actually get a Transit delivered.

LDV do them, various sizes, number of battery options, up to 88kwh

The Nissan eNV200 is not that big.

Loads of choices out there but you need to be very realistic with your expected range at speed and with a payload. Most are ideal for local work doing parcel delivery, but once you start taking a 50-75kWh van to motorway speeds your range starts dropping drastically.

Thanks for your replies, our typical run will be around 110 miles, carrying maybe 500Kg, on mainly 60mph roads?

Something like the LEVC VN5 might work for you.

What's the budget?

Only 64 miles electric range - and I'm guessing the OP might want an all electric van for tax reasons..

I sell vans, and the above would probably be my suggestion.

Off the top of my head the electric Vivaro/Expert etc have a range of 200 miles, more than likely that will be 180ish in the real world. With 500kg at 60mph you can take another chunk off that range. Speak to a few dealers and see if you can get one on demo for a few days to see if it actually works for you in the real world. I won't sell an electric van unless the customer has lived with it for 3 days as a minimum, ideally a week as it's an expensive mistake to make if it's not fit for purpose.

If that's not big enough for you, there will be a gen2 eSprinter in the next 12-18 months with a range of over 200 miles (if not 250) which might do the trick if you can wait that long. I'd also be tempted to lease rather than buy, as ranges will have kicked on in a couple of years time.

It's a very good idea to give the van a real world test - and a good and honest way to sell vans too, well done!

I would be somewhat surprised if a 200 mile official range van can do 110 miles at speed with 500kg in the back, and on a cold day... It would need to do it during a summer day with about 40 miles range left to be confident it'll do it when it's zero degrees.

I've tested a few on my channel. The Toyota Proace is pretty decent, and obviously its a platform share with Stellantis, so you can get it in Vauxhall, Citroen, Fiat and Peugeot flavours too.

The one I would avoid is the larger ones, so the Ducato, Relay & Movano. Very poor in my opinion. It feels like a van thats had an EV conversion, and not a good one at that. A new one is due I'm told, and is said to be a lot better, but I haven't tested that one yet.

Still waiting to drive the new eTransit in the UK, but I hear good things about it.

To be fair your only suggestion was to buy a diesel

Until we have a budget and a cargo bay minimum volume, it's all guesswork at this point.

EV vans generally have crap real world range and cost way more than they should. If you're leasing be careful you really don't want to get stuck with a van full of advertised promise that isn't suitable in real world use.

Fiat do a Ducato electric panel van in various sizes and payloads but the smallest one is £70k ex vat or £85k all in and you'll be lucky to get real world 120 miles full payload in winter

Ford are showing their new electric Transit at Goodwood...Supervan 4.
( Might Not have a great load capacity or range though)

It was tongue in cheek - it just amused me that when the OP described the vans usage it was almost the exact opposite of what EV would be best for and sung to the benefits of diesel.

However, I'm normally the one trying to explain that EV can work for people and I'm a big fan myself!

No, I agree with you even if it was tongue in cheek.

It's probably all irrelevant anyway as vans seem to be in a worse state for lead times than cars at the moment EV or not.

Yea, worse than the waiting time for cars on many cases I'm told.

But if the desire for electric is tax related (if used as personal transport too), then BIK is pinned down low for years so it's still best to join the year++ queue.

The lead times keep growing so I guess a lot of people are doing just that.
