Surely someone could do this with an ICE. Stick a couple of snowmobile engines in Travis Pastrana's Subaru (or other) and Bob's your uncle.
Why bother exactly?

EV. Quite possibly the biggest mistake in the history of the Goodwood.
The car was appearing at The Festival of Speed not The Festival of Internal Combustion Engines. Like it or not - I'm not totally convinced yet - EVs are here to stay so we might as well celebrate the fast ones.
indeed. we can celebrate all types of propulsion without going blinkered and tribal. I suspect Goodwood will be the last place to ban petrol, whilst being open to new ideas.

Was at the top of the hill for the Shootout yesterday afternoon, Absolutely stunning, one of those moments where me and my son looked at each other with mouths open
Great story, great moment. Brill - a ‘where were you’ moment… :-))

I had the same kind of moment with my dad in the Forest of Dean, group B cars coming through on full chat at 02:00, pitch dark, peeing rain, cold, bloody marvellous…!

I admit- ICE has ‘lost’ (in every way possible now) - when Lamborghini announced the last V12, that was yet another signal…

I am an aerospace engineer - I guess mechanical systems running on thermo dynamic and fluid mechanic principles are what inspired me when I was younger, maybe seeing this will inspire your lad - or anyone else to do great things… I take comfort in the development of people - that’s a great thing & necessary - absolutely, no argument at all.

What I don’t like, and don’t accept is ‘legislators’ deciding for me. Just like diesel, anyone that’s ever seen a diesel car from the 90’s or 2000’s would have quickly seen that these things were in no way ‘green’…

But because ‘legislation’ and ‘science’ they were remorselessly promoted and financially rewarded for use - especially in the EU…

Now the ICE is ‘roundly demonised’ across the legislatures of the worlds so called ‘progressive’ economies, it’s not enough for legislation to get its way, no, they seem to want people to ‘cancel’ their thoughts and accept they were ‘wrong’ and be somehow ‘ashamed’ of the like for something that legislation now deems ‘a pariah’ of the times…

It’s kind of ironic that the entire world has reached where it is today because of the industrial revolution’s inventions and advancements - which was fine whilst that ‘progress was needed’ - but now they need to be cancelled as quickly as possible - and somehow cancelled with malice into the bargain…?

Great time, great vehicle, I guess some might say, F1 ground effects cars were there quite some time ago, nothing really new in the world I suppose - it goes in cycles. For sure the reliance on cobalt and lithium will have its ‘cycle’ too…!

Glad you had that moment, after the last years, you deserved it!

The record that has stood for so so long finally beaten & Nick H there too to shake his hand at the top - very fitting.

I personally don’t get like the noise of the EVs but who knows how things will change.

How long will this record last? I’ll wager one year and things may keep falling marginally year on year as EVs get better and better.

That Group C Jag though - remarkable speed, I winder if we will ever see a Sauber C9/11 Merc trying it’s chances up the hill.
{Imagine group C class only racing up the hill … what an experience that would be}.

It might be mega fast but it leaves me cold

As they say there is more to cars than just speed
If we are looking at time trials then yes it excels

In everything else in my opinion it’s left wanting

Reminds me abit of the Pixar cars movies! 1st snd 2nd movie lightning McQueen this loud v8 injecting abit of soul
By cars 3 he got beat by the new technology which leaves you cold in reality!

Saw the video at the weekend before I knew what it was. Just bonkers fast and the way it (literally?) sticks to the road is other-worldly. Mention of the fan - so does this actually suck air from under the car to stick it down (like a hoover - other brands are available)?

Yep. Watch the footage of the race run - it sits on the line with the Marshall holding it on the chock, and the downforce spools up for a couple of seconds..., the car is being "sucked" down into the tarmac before its got any ground/air speed at all. Thats part of the reason why it can do 0-60 in 1.3 seconds with not a huge amount of tyre.

I watched in in person on Thursday/Friday and its incredible.

Its also very, very small.

Agree, but we still love steam locomotive and people still watch horse races - just no one takes them to town any more because there is a better alternative. ICE cars will not go away, just likely to become more valued and cherished, something for a special occasion.

And , well done to the McMurtry team.
No one is trying to ban steam locomotives or horses though, and that's the critical difference. There is an active movement against ICE vehicles and, even if their use isn't banned entirely, they will become so expensive to run that the vast majority won't be able to afford them.

Watch fuel prices rocket once there is no demand and extraction loses its economy of scale. We might be able to use synthetic fuels instead but, again, they will be costly. Obviously that's all some way off, but I think the idea that enthusiasts are going to be able to enjoy ICE cars is slightly fanciful sadly. Like horses (and steam locomotives actually), they will be play things for those that can afford them.

Love it!

No fake noise, no frills, just amazing speed.

Plus: Small size, only one seat.

A true sportscar.
I must say, a single-seat sports car doesn't sound much fun for me. Great if you have no friends I guess, but not much good if you want to go out with the missus for the day.

This is just the beginning of the journey though. There are a handful of YouTube videos on the car and one where they mention a possible 2 seater. Plus there will no doubt be other manufacturers embracing similar aspects of this technology down the line.

I’d seen the pictures, skim read details of the car but pretty much dismissed it as an unknown, almost a bit of a joke in appearance and likely to disappear without trace.

Wow. I may have misjudged this somewhat.

That was crazy to watch going up the hill. First time viewing I was holding my breath in some sections expecting an almighty crash.

I love a decent engine noise, but it even sounded alright.

Not sure how this performance translates to a road or how long you’d have performance in a track environment.

Soooo... like horses and steam trains then? biggrin

Petrol ain't going anywhere for a long time I think, I'm pretty optimistic about it.

As for this run, it's awesome and congrats to McMurtry, but as others have said it leaves me a little cold which is a shame. The Pagani Huayra R on the other, Jesus Christ that's a run I could watch (well, listen to) again and again.

What an interesting chap - didn’t realise he was Mr Renishaw - all makes a bit more sense now.

He isn’t (doesn’t need to) do this for the money - the same man who said he wanted to dispose of his 50% stake of Renishaw and allowed the sales & marketing person to be the next CEO IIRC?

He built the huge eco mansion but doesn’t live in it as his wife thinks it’s too flashy - love their style!

This is the first EV that I have to say made me internally say WOW - that real dust trail is impressive

I like the small proportions (not sure I would fit in it!).

I wonder what the USP is in a speed legislated road legal world? Don’t get me wrong I love it!

If I had the money would I buy one? YES!!!

I think we were all feeling that! Is the driveway at Goodwood House a safe place to do this? What if something broke and/or the driver lost control? We could be looking at an accident like Le Mans 1955 all over again.

Otherworldly. Performance and noise more like a UFO than a car. If your milk used to be delivered by something that sounded like that, did you grow up on Mars?

Unfortunate looking thing, though, I wonder if it gets any downforce from how much the styling sucks hehe Form following function I suspect, and the range/performance numbers for the road car are impressive.

Lots of the old 'Whats this doing here, last time I checked this was called PISTONheads, not VOLTheads' brigade out in force.

I love this - Its a completely new take on making a car go bonkers fast - that should be celebrated on here (to be fair, half of the responses do).

To write this off because it hasnt got 'soul' is absurd, Jeremy clarkson has a lot to answer for when people are lobbing this platitude around, I love seeing this blast up the hill as much as I love seeing James Deans Bmw blitz it sideways and cars like the singer or a mclaren f1 go up the hill.

If you dont like it as its just not your thing, thats fine (I'm just not that into bikes, but I totally get why people are) but Its possible to enjoy evs for what they are rather than hating them for what they're not.

Well yes, but that was kind of the point. ICE cars becoming the preserve of the wealthy doesn't sound like a very bright future to me, even though it is some way off and won't effect me that much.
