Has anyone else noticed an increase in the number of cars leaving a ferocious trail of billowing filth behind them?

Slightly knackered vans and 3.5t tippers doing it are to be somewhat expected. But I can't remember ever seeing, or being stuck behind, as many cars doing it as I have in the last six months or so. Primarily seems to be mid-late 00's German fare, usually in a bit of a state.

Just seems strange to me how even with clean air at a higher priority than ever, and rightly so, there's still so many people around unintentionally rolling coal.

Haven't noticed an increase. Did see a 54 plate Bora though Friday belching the stuff out, which funnily enough fits the OPs description nicely.

I've noticed a lot more firms offerring remaps and also some very rapid dismals around here. They make a lot of noise and do leave a fair bit of smoke when on full chat. They pop, bang and fart a lot to.

There's a very noticeable increase in the this in the Midlands. VAG products coughing up huge plumes of smoke.

If theres a car belching black smoke its usually a taxicab... lots of short journeys and idling probably kills dpfs very quickly. Easier to just get rid i guess.

I followed a Mini Cooper D (or SD not sure) and it was chucking amazing amounts smoke out the back. I had the roof down and it had a horrible burning smell. Presume it was fubar rather than mapped ?

Followed a 2007 Range Rover for a few miles earlier in the week. Every time the the driver put his foot down, the world temporarily disappeared in a huge cloud of black smoke.

Depends where you are, but have spotted quite a few.

Did my best to get past them ASAP (even closed my windows). Grim.

I've seen on it of a few Transit vans as well. It's Council types with the "feck everybody else, I'm alright jack" attitude

My diesel five series has started doing it more often, particularly if you boot it out of a junction. It has relatively recently replaced dpf and not remapped or modified. Suspect it’s doing more short journeys since lockdowns and less trips to the office. Does still get a couple of long runs each month. May also just be as they get older and more crudded up.

Our TDV8 Range Rover is quite embarrassing for this. The second turbo only spools up past a certain RPM which is rarely hit whilst pottering around town. As a result it clogs up. On those occasions when you plant your foot for the first time in a while and the second turbo spools up the cloud of smoke that comes out the exhaust is huge!

I was behind a VW Caddy earlier today that was doing this as it accelerated, pretty much obscured the road.

is it not due to worn injectors overfuelling?

This is the crux of it, Joey Chavrat and his mates running shagged old Golfs, Caddies, A4s etc with zero maintenance and crappy mods for moarr powah bruv.
