This 3 series was in its death throws by the look of its emissions. (Petrol too!)

Mk1 Mondeo noticed the other night. All the time, idling, accelerating, constant speed, like a WW2 destroyer laying smoke to cover a convoy.

Though did see a Defender a while back, one of the last of the old Defenders if you get my drift, driven very spiritedly which was belching out massive clods of black smoke. Suspect it had been mapped to within an inch of life. Just for info the use of the term 'clods of black smoke' was not a typo, so black it looked like solid lumps every time the driver gave it a boot full.

Far fewer cars belching out any black smoke. Many, many more EVs being used by members of the public who visit where I work for the NT in Cornwall. Everything from latest top-of-the-range models to Enterprise Car Club stuff, and hybrid Leafs, Auris etc with taxi plates from all over the country.
The locals still seem to be favouring diesels, but they’re not showing much (if any) visible emissions at all.

I see absolutely loads of them here in Manchester, tallying with the OP’s observations. Mostly pre-2013 ropey as hell German rubbish like 320ds, C220ds, VAG stuff, plus lots of vans, private hire vehicles and by far thr worst are black cabs. Problem has got worse since mayor Andy Burnham put the CAZ on hold here. In my car at least I can put the climate control on recirc, but when I’m cycling it’s bloody horrible!

Nope ,can't remember the last time I saw that.
I see it regularly. Either knackered trucks/vans or dheads with tuned diesel cars. Pisses me off following them.

I wish the police would do something to clamp down on it. I'm no eco-warrior but it's taking the piss churning out fumes like that.

Our TDV8 Range Rover is quite embarrassing for this. The second turbo only spools up past a certain RPM which is rarely hit whilst pottering around town. As a result it clogs up. On those occasions when you plant your foot for the first time in a while and the second turbo spools up the cloud of smoke that comes out the exhaust is huge!
4.4??

There's a fix for that!
That’s the one! I have seen mention of a fix but it’s never bothered me enough to look in to it!

Mapping a diesel to specifically produce 'reek' is very much a thing over here in NI.

These rear ends covered in soot are usually spotted on a German car at least 10 years old with 4d plates, a chameleon tint on the windscreen and slammed on Chinese coilovers.

Sounds like the 'rolling coal' nob heads in the States.

I think some bell in a Golf actually tried to smoke me out last year in Pangbourne come think of it. He didn't give way passing beneath a narrow bridge so I made it awkward for him to squeeze past on other side. His reaction to this was to bounce off the limiter once alongside.

I have noticed a marked increase in black smoke billowers, but our second car is a 2005 1.9d Octavia, which my wife drives. It has 192K on the clock and on startup and when she drives off, there isn't a hint of black smoke.

I'm still seeing remapped VAG TDi belching black spot when doing terrible passes on 30 mph roads.

I thought the updated MOT had addressed this...

is it not due to worn injectors overfuelling?
Yes and also dirty injectors which may be a result of people using the cheapest fuel available as they cannot afford the higher quality.

Followed a 2007 Range Rover for a few miles earlier in the week. Every time the the driver put his foot down, the world temporarily disappeared in a huge cloud of black smoke.
Wasn't red in colour in the Dundee/Perth area was it? edit - just seen your profile says south coast - so unlikely

Was behind one that was getting irate on the A90 tailgating a dawdler in the outside lane, every time he buried the throttle, covered everyone behind in thick black smoke.

Also seen a few old fabia VRS in the dunfermline area like this, assumed it was an anti-social map.

Cars in a poor state of repair, going to be one more common as your average person gets hammered month on month thus car maintenance will drop even further down the priority list. Add to smoke the illegal tyres, rotten brakes and "forgetting" to tax or insure it and it won't just be the scallys either, Karen and Alistair will soon be looking to cut costs and for many, that'll start with the cars...

No because likely its been looked after and serviced regularly. It's the ones with zero servicing, dirty oil blocked air and fuel filters causing egr amon gst other issues..

Roll coal passing cyclists.

Every single Land Rover/Range Rover over ~5 years old seems to do this that I can see.

Old Defenders stink/smoke the place up but then also blind you with those cheapo aftermarket Chinese LED’s that everyone seems to fit.
