RE: New 2.0-litre Mercedes-AMG C63 officially unveiled
Discussion
"More time, understandably, has been dedicated to how the C63 sounds. More important than ever now, given the charisma of the missing V8. So there’s a loudspeaker to warn pedestrians, while those inside are treated to an ‘immediately recognisable’ AMG sound. It’s achieved by recording the sound of the engine before enriching it (their words, now ours) and then sending it out via the sound system (with some help from the exterior speakers as well). Complex, then, but what else did you expect? "
Lol I appreciate that the manufacturers are constrained by Regs but does anyone really want sound through speakers.
Time to rename this car C20e surely.
TX.

Assuming the W205 is 510hp and 1730kg, that's ~294hp per ton.
This is 680 and 2111kg, so 322hp per ton.
A >30% increase in power for a <10% increase in hp per ton. Very efficient
I'd echo the other comments here that if I were buying one (which admittedly, I'm not!) I'd rather it was just a full EV than have a dreadful sounding turbo 4 pot in it.

Hey man, you misread me, I mentioned the sports misquoting, although the Datsun thing does irk me but i generally let it slide these days. I am interested to know, why did you call it a Datsun though? Its not jist you, many non fans do and I wonder what is the thought process behind it?
Without wishing to derail the thread: because I'm old enough and well travelled enough to remember seeing the same cars badged both Datsun and Nissan, and have been playfully swapping the names around since long, long before a certain farmer made his fortune shouting about speed and power. Re: "non-fans", for me it's purely the GTR. Have always been a fan of fairladys, Z-cars from 240 to 370, and skylines up to R34...but the GTR just has something about it that I don't like and have never been able to put my finger on it. Objectively it makes no sense because in all other regards the car is phenomenal.
And that is the point I was making re: the new C63. The bhp figure and angry grille alone should make me fizz, but...it doesn't.
Said by someone who quite likes the Purosangue but not the Urus. There's no real logic behind different tastes.
Anyone know what the newer MCT boxes are like in the real world?
I used to own a C63 507 with the 7 speed MCT and it was decent enough but not a patch on a PDK of the same era for example.
I'm sure the game has moved on an awful lot since then, but are they sticking with the MCT purely because of the torque numbers which their DCT can't handle? Or is this just the the better option?

Time will tell as to what mileages these 476 bhp 2 litre "fours" hold up to under the extended service intervals enjoyed by most PCP purchasers.
The proliferation of PCP deals amounts to effectively a vast fleet of rental vehicles treated to the minimum servicing required under the contract. Ally this with increasing states of tune & you're looking at a secondhand market potentially populated with either motors about to grenade themselves or engines in an increasingly smokey death spiral.

For long range high speed cruising on the Autobahn you need a Diesel. A 530d at 200km/h will consume around 10L/100km. A X5 40d at 230 around 17L/100km. Anything beyond 220km/h for more than just a few minutes is not realistic, even at night.
Got any data to support these numbers.200km/h is 125MPH
10L/100km is 62.5Miles with 2.25 Gals or 27MPG
Drag increases with the cube of speed, so seems hard to accept efficiency is that good..

I would like to think most posters would be able to tell the difference in sound between a boosted 4 pot and a V8.
From within with the piped v8 rumble? I believe some of these gizmos are very realistic andyA700 said:

Perhaps "might this be the first production 2.0-litre car in history capable of 200mph?" was what was meant! Dat Shmoking Shkoda was not exactly production-ready! But I'm still voting for the Gemera, so stop trying to confuse me with facts!
Matt's carwow video on the new C63 is a good watch - he doesn't shy away from telling the AMG rep what he really thinks lol:

Yep. Points to the fake side "vents" on the car and asks what they do and the marketing chap just says "it's to show the sporting nature of the car" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtXiFTw_hbU
To be fair to the marketing guy, he knew his stuff. Just not my sort of car, whereas the last one was, but the first C63 is my favourite.

Why do I get the impression this makes no difference to any long term emissions/climate/eco/whatever it is for downsizing and is solely a pretence.
Yes, I’m sceptical. Bring back the V8
Yeah, maybe the 2.0 turbo thingamy reduces their average CO2 across the range and so they can slap themselves on the back?Yes, I’m sceptical. Bring back the V8

In fairness, whilst it had a bit of fettling it was the same base EA888 2.0 unit that was fitted to production cars.Perhaps "might this be the first production 2.0-litre car in history capable of 200mph?" was what was meant! Fair enough in hindsight I shot from the hip a bit with that statement and could have chosen my words more carefully!
I agree there were a lot of production cars pre 2000 with excellent sounding 4’s as well as a lot of current track biased cars and bikes etc
But as for current production cars most 4 cylinders need fake noises or pops and bangs to sound interesting. Doubt anyone has bought a 2.0 jag f type over a V6 or V8 because they prefer the noise for example!
Suppose I am biased having fitted a rocketeer V6 into my 1990 MX5!
Haha! Oh I'm right with ya - fake noises of any persuasion just makes me cringe, just give me the real noise, and I'll appreciate and accept it for what it is. I love the throb of a WRX/STI/Whatever Scooby, as it's distinctive and unique, and sparks cracking memories of RB & CMcR. I actually don't mind the rasp of an AMG 45S (though my neighbour does have an Akrapovic system on his, and even though I'm old, the sound of it does give me a bit of a giggle!). But yeah, no 4 cylinder will ever, EVER replace that gorgeous V8 sound, and it is a very sad day that those days are gone....... and even sadder that they feel the need to pipe fake noise in to the cabin to compensate. It really rubs me up the wrong way, and while yeah - it may knock multiple seconds of it's Nurburgring time, the 4-pot in this thing ain't gonna move you like a Scooby, Millington, Twin-Cam Alfa (or any number of motorbike 4-pots!), etc., etc., so it'll do it with a significant loss of soul.I agree there were a lot of production cars pre 2000 with excellent sounding 4’s as well as a lot of current track biased cars and bikes etc
