… this car was fitted with a Webasto night heater used in trucks, so you always had a warm engine….
That was an expensive Mercedes factory extra - very popular in cold climate markets and taxi spec cars where the driver could keep the engine fluids and cabin warm without running the engine

Standheizung, as the Germans call it, remains popular, especially in southern Germany where -15C isn't uncommon. Main dealers and Bosch Service Centres still do a lot of retrofits - at about €2000 per install. The modern ones are controlled on an app. Effectively you're getting into a toasty warm defrosted car every morning.

Isn't Northern Germany colder than Southern Germany?

I only have alpine experience - and it was bloody freezing! But yes, you're right of course.

My dad had an '88 320i, then a '92 190E 2.0 auto and later I owned an '88 530iSE and borrowed a '92 Primera eGT a lot. All 5 seater saloons built within 4 years of each other. Here how I remember them:

320i: beautiful 6cyl engine, sounded like a little sewing machine. Slightly soft handling. Slightly rubbery gear change. Decent build quality.

190E: too softly sprung for my liking and roly poly in the bends. Steering very slow. Seats had too little lateral support. Unrefined engine. Well built, but not notably better than the 320i.

530i: nice engine, not as refined as the 320i. Better handling than either of the above. Quieter and more refined than either of the above or below. Build as good as the above. Better gear change than the 320i.

eGT: engine more free revving than the all of above. More grip, but less comfy than all of the above. Interior build not quite up to the above, but more highly featured. Gearchange, best of the bunch.

Which was my favourite: easy, the 530i. Not surprising really, it was a more expensive machine. That got you more sound proofing and more isolated suspension than cheaper cars. Not sure that's what you get for the extra money nowadays?

I always found the way the boot lid is almost a flat piece of metal that opens like the lid on a tin quite amusing

If it is as good as it looks, I do not think you can loose money on that.
