To be honest, Vauxhall are no worse for a chavvy image than certain other vehicles.

We've all seen the enraged dad in his modified Vauxhall Zafira, but the same can be observed of many a Focus ST driver or the odd fast Audi!

In terms of quality, they're no better or worse than your average Ford, Renault, Kia etc. We hired a car for a holiday and they gave us the last Insignia and despite the engine being a bit weedy (1.4 turbo) the engine car was great.

As for vaping, well it's good to wean someone off smoking but it's those vast clouds of apple scented mingingness that puts me off. Someone having a bit of a vape is less grim than cigarette smoke I guess.

I dont worry about the car brand, as long as I want that specific model, I find it weird when people write off a whole brand as being crap or beneath them, sees to be a facet of those who are a bit try hard, know someone who wouldn't have a Ford Galaxy, wouldn't be seen dead in a Ford, but was happy with an identical VW Sharan and thats how ludicrous it is.

Think the recent Vauxhalls are handsome things, the Astra and even the Mokka, plenty of Vauxhalls from the past I would have, Manta GTE (ok, Opel, but you know what I mean) Chevette HS, Carlton, Omega, Magnum etc. Know folk who have had them and had years and years of reliable service from them.

Am I itching to buy one at the moment, not really, I think some perceive Ford and Vauxhall as poor peoples cars, a bit too blue collar and like to be a few rungs up, sometimes skinning themselves to run something "Premium", and there is also the perception from some that you should spend as much as you can, and then some on your car but a lot of the public really arent all that bothered, work with a guy who gets a new Corsa every three years without fail, he isnt short of cash at all and could afford a lot more expenive car but he is happy and familiar with his Corsas, going back to the nineties.

Vaping though, makes sense if it weans someone off fags, lesser of two evils but go to the local Sainsburys and all the school kids wander over to get lunch and are corralled outside and let in on a one in, one out basis to avoid arsing about and theft, and you walk past and it smells like a cross between an explosion in a Lush Shop and Willy Wonkas laboratory. About a third stood there vaping on what look like the disposable vapes.

Does amaze me how I dont see many folk smoking now, but on my evening dog walk when I do a bit of a litter pick, always a few fag packets so I think that smokers are generally more prone to dropping litter ? And the same for the vape boxes, and energy drinks, think there is a correlation there.

I'll reply further in a bit, I'm just off out to get a tattoo on my face of an English Bulldog wearing a St Georges Flag.

Smoking/vaping is another topic. I’m not sure why I should have to inhale the byproduct of your pleasure, I’m sure if I was to piss on your trousers after a beer you’d be quite cross indeed. It’s a disgusting habit. I suppose at least with vapes there’s less littering? It’s so unbelievably scummy to throw a fag end out the window, marks the individual out as a total bellend.
Not seen the swatches of black, plastic, battery-filled disposable vape pens that seem to litter the ground around most train/bus stations?

Also rofl at throwing fag buts out the window, your views are totally uninformed and wrong. FYI the 996s are preserves of 'total bellends'/council folk aspiring to Porsche ownership around here, so you might want to take up throwing cigarettes out of your window next.

I used to smoke.
15-20 a day for 10 years.
Marlboro lights but switched to Dunhill for going out.

I used to drive Vauxhalls.
Cavalier SRi (Mk2)
Vectra V6 SRi
Omega Elite V6

I gave up smoking ‘the man’s way’ by just stopping and pushing through the cravings and grumpiness.

I didn’t give up Vauxhalls, just was fortunate / hard working / motivated enough to afford better cars.

I don’t look down on Vauxhalls at all.
Good cars in the main & I always liked an Insignia as a hire car.

I do look down on vapers.
If you are going to smoke have the courage of your convictions & smoke.
If you aren’t going to then stop.

However I am a fat b**stard who likes cake & beer so please feel free to judge my hypocrisy / life choices as appropriate.

Genuine well done for quitting using will-power alone, but for some like me, who have tried multiple methods and always failed then it doesn't feel like an option. Would you look down on an ex-heroin addict being prescribed a drug to substitute their habit? Because smoking, as eluded to prior, is thought to be at least as addictive as it, if not more.

Oh, and user-name definitely doesn't check out tongue out

Get a Mrs who hates it, and some kids - kids today look upon smoking as the worst of the worst.

Do they, though? My neice, who is 22, said that at her sixth form college you were viewed as the lowest of low scum if you drank alcohol or ate meat, but cigarette smoking and even cocaine use were absolutely fine!

I am fortunate enough to have always ‘swerved’ recreational drugs, but honestly the downsides of Heroin wasn’t exactly a secret when I was growIng up, so sympathy is limited. But the whole reason for fessing up to my own weaknesses was to explain that while I may have done it my own way I get that everyone can’t.

Stick Legs is an old nickname from before my current ‘Clydesdale’ physique when I used to cycle a lot.
Skinny claves left me with that nickname.

I meant younger kids. Smoke in front of a 9-13 year old and you couldn't be more evil.

Agree about students, though - the grads that come in to work openly talk about weekends on Coke and MDMA, getting it delivered through the post on the dark web etc. Make the 80s/90s rave scene look positively tame! biggrin

That is brilliant, the thought of Dunhill being kept for best as an indicator of sophistication when out on the pull. laugh

Regarding this point, and in particular when driving. I've stated that I attempt to keep my vape 'smoke' away from others, but that I am guilty of using it on occasions when driving. At 60mph in the dry the stopping distance is 120-140 feet. Does one exhale of vape really make it this distance, hit the exact spot your car is at, get through the cabin air filter and cause you that much bother? My Father In Law also has Asthma. He has joked numerous times about the plumes you see coming from cars when driving, yet never once said anything along the lines of 'and it gets right up my nose'.

If it genuinely does then that is something I need to take in to extra consideration.

It's certainly enough to smell in a car behind in town. Probably no at 60mph and no more than the stench of a diesel[1] tbh. My recirculation button gets a regular workout from them.

Given how dispersed the cloud is going to be after travelling 120 odd feet at 60 mph, I really wouldn't worry about it.

It can travel that far easily when you're travelling at speed, but does it bother me?. It just gets an eyeroll along with all the other scumbag / inconsiderate behaviour I witness on my m'way commute (fag butts / litter out of windows etc etc).

We all used to reserve the sophisticated fags for social occasions, though. In my case it was Sobranie Cocktails (what I'd give for some now) for best and Superkings for everyday use.

Nowadays it's long B&H in a drab packet.
