RE: Convertibles for under £10k | Six of the Best
Discussion
Those saying they'd pick the Alfa, try driving one first. Many years ago I too was taken in by the looks and took one for a test drive, I brought it back within 10 minutes. The car literally felt like it was going to shake itself apart over every hump and pothole. The scuttle shake is definitely not overexaggerated, it literally ruined the car.
A few years ago I'd have picked an S2000 for £10k but you unfortunately you won't get a decent one for that price now, I'd pick the Boxster, it will be the best drive out of that lot.

Plenty of 3.0 Z4s on here for under 10 grand. Not sure if they're any good to drive, mind. But if all you want are looks and sound, haggle £750 off this:

Alfa Spider doesn't belong here. Having owned a Brera 2.2S for about 16 months the novelty of stunning looks soon wears off. You then realise what a slow, heavy, dead-feeling, un-sporty car it really is. And I'm a serial Alfa owner. So the Spider version will be the same mix even with a (non-Alfa Busso) V6 under its snout.
You're better-off to get the 916 version Spider with the 3.0 Busso V6 - GTV version is far superior than the Brera ie) a proper soulful Alfa, and you won't lose any money in it unlike this.
I don't rate the looks either. The detailing is lovely but the overall shape and silhouette is a typical gimpy looking FWD pudding with that ridiculous cab forward stance and a seating position like you're on the bog. You're better-off to get the 916 version Spider with the 3.0 Busso V6 - GTV version is far superior than the Brera ie) a proper soulful Alfa, and you won't lose any money in it unlike this.
Alfa Romeo have been the grand masters of perfuming a pig with their FWD cars, but it doesn't take long to realise it's got a snout and curly tail.
£10k for an NB is comedy, but with those miles how on earth do you value it? If it was an NA it'd be £30k+ I'm sure, so it does reflect how unwanted that version is.

Quite fancy the Lotus Elan doesn't seem bad £8500.ok it's got 140,000 miles but it's over 30 years old so it's nothing really but if I was going for a 2 seater I'd go for its relative a VX220..
Built by lotus at Hethel other than badges it's a lotus don't think you would find a decent Turbo for 10 grand even a high mileage average condition 1 but even the NA 2.2 L Engine does 0-60 under 6 seconds at 5.9.is quick enough I've driven a friend's who bought his from a Lotus specialist.who always has 3 or 4 for sale.
Always fancied an MX-5 and this particular car is as good as new but you might as well pay a little more and get the latest generation . You could pick up a reasonable mileage well looked after NB for 2 grandish looks wise not a patch on a NA or NC . I'd rather pay £2000 for a car with 105,000 in average condition than 10grand for this car in the article with 5000 miles in like new condition.

I like the MX5 myself. 10k for what seems to be a new car. What does 10k get you in new cars these days? It would be painless to own and hold much of its value. Alas, at 6ft2”, I am too tall for it.
I’m also 6’2” and had an NB MX5 for about three years - no prob fitting in with either soft or hard top up.Of the list, the Boxster and Elan get my vote, and the MX5 as a new/old car would be interesting. Re age/mileage of the Elan, condition is everything.

Mercedes for cruising around and nice long comfortable road trips
I have a Elan M100, that's the zippiest/best handling/feel good drive car for a country road blast.
You're the first poster who has matched my preferences! The Elan would be my first choice - I think that is a CRACKING price for that car, as the mileage wouldn't bother me in the slightest if the service history is up to scratch (and fair play for already owning one!), but that Merc looks lovely, and who doesn't like a bit of chilled out wafting every now and again (with the added fun of having a V8 under the right foot when a wee urge for a giggle takes over!).I have a Elan M100, that's the zippiest/best handling/feel good drive car for a country road blast.
