Polestar 2 Edition 270 returns... as Edition 230

Even fewer examples (and more money asked) as Polestar's trick BST flagship returns for seconds

Time waits for no one in the EV world, even those customers who’ve splashed the cash on the flagship model in a manufacturer’s lineup. With customers of the 2 BST Edition 270 only just tearing the plastic off their charge cables, Polestar has announced the follow-up with an identical spec: the Edition 230.

It really is very similar, too, with the same 25mm ride height drop (on 20 per cent stiffer springs), Ohlins two-way adjustable dampers, black 21-inch wheels and Pirelli P Zero tyres. Even power and torque are unchanged, at 476hp and 502lb ft, meaning 4.4 seconds to 62mph and 125mph. The differences are now said to be on ‘performance design details’, which include a unique green Nebula paint, suede interior inserts and part recycled content. Black paint is also available, and the option of a stripe remains.

Curiously, it seems that this Edition 230 doesn’t use the newly updated Polestar 2 as its base. There’s no mention of it in the press release, and its peak torque figure is lower than the 546lb ft promised from the latest twin motor, all-wheel drive model with its new hardware. All Thomas Ingenlath had to add was that cars like this one “allow us to explore colours, graphics and materials in faster and more creative ways.” Presumably somewhat ironically, given the exterior palette is camo green and a black so dark it’s called ‘Space’.

The Edition 230 seems, basically, a chance for those who missed the boat on what must have been an oversubscribed 270. Not that there’ll be much opportunity with this car, either, as just 230 are to be made. 25 of those have been allocated for the UK (it was 40 before), and the price is £73,900. Probably a safer bet than crypto or SVB for your start-up profits, but still a lot of money for what is now familiar tech. Will lightning strike twice for Polestar’s special 2?

Odd that it's not based on the MY24 car, but it does have the updated grille.

Really hope Polestar are not going to be one of those companies that trots out special editions all the time.

Wait, its the Clio Williams all over again....

They prob didn't use the new car as a base as the owners who have just taken the 270 would surely be pretty pisst off...

Polestar's Instagram states "Disclaimer: The SmartZone displayed is fitted as a post-registration upgrade. Original front grille available on request at no extra cost before handover". This would seem to confirm it's not based on the MY24 updated car, so is this a run-out edition of the older one?

There's a real risk of dilution if they decide to apply the BST upgrades to a MY24 car later on. I must admit to being a little unsure as to what they're trying to do here, other than giving a few more people the chance to get their hands on one. McLaren did this a lot and ended up annoying customers (there's only going to be 200 so buy now! No wait sorry, now another 200 convertibles. Don't worry they're won't be anything better than this. Ooh wait here's 50 stripped out even faster ones. No, that's the lot we promise. Oh sorry here's 20 track-only special versions.)

I do like these. More so because they are comparatively rare on the roads.

But I will likely never be able to afford one, even in 15 years time when depreciation has hit (and I'll be too old then anyway lol).

No matter how much I look at these, they just look odd from the side/rear three quarter. Like they couldnt make their mind up whether it was going to be a saloon, hatch, or crossover coupe SUV thing.

Looks great in that green.

Quite like the Polestar 2s, except for the fact they don't do any exciting colours. Why not that lovely blue you get on the Volvos? Or the oranges/yellows they used to do too?

Appreciate it's seen as more of a white good, but let's give it some nice colours.

I'm not a massive fan of the i4 but at least you can get some lovely colours on the BMWs.

There is some guff in the brand guidelines (yes, and I even work in branding) about the colour palette – https://www.polestar.com/global/news/journal-1/

Polestar’s monochrome colour palette is a minimalistic foundation on which accent colours are allowed to add life and energy. This digital and athletic influence is the addition that makes something that could be perceived as a dull colour scheme into something outstanding and powerful.

Seems a pointless product when its not based on the 2024 facelift year which is now more RWD bias and quicker.

I had expected this to be 500bhp+

There are few words less appropriate to discuss the Polestar colour palette than "life" and "energy"

I'm getting extremely bored with new cars that start north of £60k!! Perhaps invest in producing a smaller cheaper alternative. You know the sort of thing, £25k, 200 mile range, 8s to 60, 100mph top end. The sort of thing that the average person on an average wage can afford to buy without committing to 5 years at some extortionate interest rate PCP. Bring Back the good old days. Motoring for the masses, not just for the very, very rich.

If ever you are feeling ignored and overqualified, just think how the adjustable Ohlins dampers in those things feel.

One of my favourite bits. They look ace when they animate when you unlock and lock the car.

God bless Volvo and Polestar’s designers.
While the Germans shamelessly style their cars to appeal to Chinese buyers’ taste, and effectively tell Europeans ‘to like it or lump it‘, the Swedes are true to their cultural roots.
Cheers, Geely, mine’s an irony and soda.

I'm so glad I've managed to pick up my own P2 Performance model under £50K. It just seems prices are going up and up all the time.

clap - Quite, although I think the Koni's vauxhall fitted on the new astra GSE might just pip these to the post
