RE: Maserati 4200 Spyder | Spotted

Like all cars of this ilk, deep pockets required.
A friend had one and the suspension wore out. Even 10 years ago, aftermarket shocks were really expensive. While Mike Brewer may have his "contacts" for borked throttle bodies, not everyone knows such people.
Aside from that, I think the XKR is better value and looks just as good.

Sorry to be that guy, but I think that looks terrible. The rear lights look like they're from a van. The front end looks like a bad mash-up of a Jag and a Fiat. And the reliability is probably a combination of those two as well, despite the lovely noise made by the V8.
£22k is only going to be the start of the costs of owning that...
+1 Looks are a personal thing I know, but to me that colour combo is yuck and the front end one these looks also wrong to me. It may sound great but the bills will keep rolling in.£22k is only going to be the start of the costs of owning that...
Had an ‘04 blue and tan cambicossa one for 3 years. Had a Larini exhaust. Sounded epic on song and was certainly fast enough. Lots of torque from the 4.2, much more than the F355 that preceded it. Thus was a much better distance car, twice to Angouleme.
The ‘04 and later are much more rigid cars addressing some of the body flex issues, ie those with the glass rear window.
A previous owner had put a modded front and rear on that initially I intended to swap back. But it kind of grew on me so I left it as was.
CC gearbox was fine and of its era. Ran it in Sport all the time, never in auto mode and got the clutch engage point (can’t remember the term) correctly adjusted and, especially at speed, it was no issue.
Fuel computer said 17mpg regardless how driven, that number might have just been stuck on! In 3 years and 15k miles, needed a service at £800ish, 1 coil pack, set of tyres and nothing else if I remember correctly. Boringly reliable.
Would have another if a later car.

As a second car for the weekend that thing is feckin epic! You lot are spoiled, cheap as chips, compared to Aus where you’d never find a manual.
Sure the running costs will be painful but still cheaper than buying a new one.
Looks great, good colour combo, manual, V8, soft top. Maserati badge, drive it under 7/10’s and listen to the noise!
I’d be all over that like an Antarctic explorer on donuts…

Looks gorgeous in that colour combo, will sound great and a manual too: what's not to like.
Puzzled by all the hate for scuttle shake: how does that ruin a driving experience? OK, so I owned a SAAB 900 Convertible for 21 years so I'm used to it, but I really don't understand how it affects your enjoyment of a car.

I've always personally preferred the boomerang rear lights to the ones on this, however this will sound lovely and it will feel special to drive and own I reckon. Very nice, and I can imagine myself cruising around roof down in this for sure.
Yeah boomerang lights!Rear lights on this are dull as ditchwater where the rest of the car looks really good. What the hell were they thinking?
I've been keeping an eye on 3200, 4200 and GranSports for a while now.
A few points of (potential) interest:
Chris Harris fairly recently commented on the Spyder as being absolutely awful to drive compared to the coupe.
The Spyder is nearly 10" shorter than the coupe.
The manual gearbox gets a lot of criticism and I don't think I've read any comments or reviews praising it or preferring it to the Cambiocorsa automated manual.
I think I've only ever seen a couple of facelifted 4200/Gransport Spyders in the classifieds over the past 10 to 15 years. For me it would have to be a facelift model as the 3200 & early 4200 front grille doesn't look right to me.

I know it's no where near the same thing, but if I was to have a Maserati, I think it'd have to be one of these:
