RE: Mazda MX-5 Rocketeer V6 | PH Private Area
Discussion
Just wanted to add that Rocketeer are a great bunch.
I was going the whole hog of a restomod MK1 before an unexpected personal life turn meant that I couldn't carry on. But I popped down to the workshop and spent time there with Bruce and when I can, would really like to give them some of my money again!
That MK1 would be money well spent.

Have enjoyed seeing my Rocketeer posted on PH and reading the nice comments. I will miss the car but after 12 years of ownership I fancy a change.
I have just got home from putting a fresh MOT on it (no advisories!) - The kind man at the MOT station let me take some pictures of the underneath. I have tried to edit my ad to put them on there but computer says no, so have put them on here instead! - I also got a video - if anyone wants that message me and I will send it to you.

Originally designed by Porsche IIRC.
Yep, designed by Porsche, bought by Ford. Tweaked by Cosworth! very nice car, also for the money, whats not to like, ok not such fan of that series/type, but the rest is very cool, look at the interior, lovely, and the engine bay MMM nice work, together with the 'series/type I'm not so fan of, makes it a cool wolf in sheep cloth.

What are you planning on getting in its place?5lab said:
I love a mk1 mx5, but that money buys a lot of boxster s. It would be heavier, sure, but overall I think it'd drive better
They aren’t really rational purchases, much like any classic car and I really do place a NA MX5 in that classic bracket. It may sound ridiculous but many people who’ve driven mine liken it to an E type Jag in terms of driving experience rather than something like a boxster.
The rocketeer conversion really does change the experience dramatically.
They aren’t the quickest cars, they aren’t dynamically anywhere near as good as something more modern, but there’s just something about them that’s fun.
Coming down the southbound slip road at J29 of the M1 this afternoon, I said to my son, “listen to this when it comes past” just as a Mk2 MX5 with BBR decals on the wings shot past. Slight chirrup from the waste gate and he was gone… until the inevitable speed camera after half a mile.
Always preferred the Mk1, possibly ‘because pop-up lights’ but the mk2 has grown on me
I drove through Conisboeough recently and saw lots of them
In MX5City, really need to stop and have a look around next time I’m passing, ostensibly for my teenage lad, but, ahem, really for me..

Echoing various comments and as one on the ‘waiting list’, I have owned my triggers broom Mk1 1996 since 1997. It’s a part of me, carried it through weddings (x2) and divorce (x1) and read up on the Rocketeer some years ago.
They happened to be based near my folks (Hungerford) and one day when I had money I test drove the demo and had a good chat with Bruce.
It’s f
king lovely. Not stupid. Not a monster. But progressive enjoyable fun - especially on the road I took it on, with reasonable knowledge of having hoofed my MX5, my then 997, various hire cars and alike on down to Burbage.
Fab.
And so I bought stage one - a blueprint engine and a plan to go full Rocketeer install. Times change and the extra chunk to install has clashed with other investments, but speaking to Bruce of late suggests they are flexing beyond repowering to full restomods.
So, I hope in two years or so, the engine he holds in a crate for me, meets my rebuilt Mk1- and once again, I get that simple joy from the test drive again as I did in 1997 and 5he Rocketeer.
The article, this thread, is a great reminder not to bin the project.

On the Locost builders forum, I’m sure these conversions were being done for circa £2k all in? Might have been the same time MEV were doing to atom type kits
Not a rocketeer conversion. It's very professionally done.Of course, it's possible to knock up a subframe and gearbox adaptor plate reasonably cheaply, but even the ECU and mapping alone is going to take a decent chunk out of £2k.
