Never going to happen. The UK 70 mph speed limit is decades out of date
and even moving to 80 mph - which would save more lives than the 70 mph limit
- hasn't happened.

Interestingly, at 86 mph in the UK, you are going so fast, that according to ACPO
guidelines its too fast for a mere FPN and so you are going to court. Pretty
harsh penalty in my view.

Same speed in France, you are merely keeping up with traffic. Certainly
not fast enough for a French copper to bother to book you.

Same speed in Germany, you are travelling slower than average and
you aren't keeping up with traffic.

Fast and efficient movement of goods and services ?
Certainly not in the UK.

And please remember in Scotland there is no speed awareness option... so we are straight into points. I did a speed awareness course once and I really thought it was good. I don't think it covered which lane to be in on a motorway / DC.

Would be an interesting question to the usual mouth breathers who attend such courses. From memory I was one of about 3 who knew what and what speeds the nsl sign was/indicated.

I'd blame stop/start technology for that. It encourages you to leave the engine off until it's time to move. You then dip the clutch and put the car in gear after the lights have changed instead of before. This may take one or two extra seconds over having the engine running and the car already in gear. Multiply that by the ten cars in front of you and that's why fewer cars are making it through the lights now.
TBF stop/start isn't as much of a problem as tw*ts messing about on their phones meaning sometimes nobody makes it through the lights. banghead
I drive cars with stop start all the time and it hasn't made me pull of from the lights as if I recieved notice of the light change via 2nd class post, as so many of our mouth breathing fellow citizens do.

It's not that deep; they're slow thinking, slow reacting Morlocks and it extends into every aspect of their lives.
Both our dailies have Stop/Start and the above comments are correct.

So many times I ve waited for mouth-breathers to finally react to a green light while presumably deeply involved with something phone-related. The latest fashion amongst (just to stereotype) mostly young women is holding FaceTime calls whilst driving. Christ - get over yourselves and fking concentrate!
Def people not paying attention.... are they really drivers? Or just glorified passengers...
You guys need to come up with a more original insult than the repetitive predictive use of mouth breather.

Unless you are made differently you are also mouth breathers smile
You need to read it all properly.

Only one person used those words, and it wasn't me. blah

I was caught for 86mph on the M6 in May and only got an FPN. Shame I had already done a SAC in 2023. rolleyes

I did a SAC once.. About 75% on the course wouldn't pass a driving test now. Some were so driving illiterate, I'm surprised they managed to get to the course without having an accident. Two of the ladies leaving couldn't even get out of the car park, claiming there wasn't enough room. Everyone else managed it ok.

You suspect wrong. Haven't had the opportunity for about 5 years though. 2004 was my best year for it.

These days, I'm more into sitting in the "slow lane" and passing everything in lanes "less slow", "fast" and "fastest" which are usually going slow, slow quick quick slow.

So what you are saying is that we might as well just do 95 because the punishment is the same? tongue out

Was driving the other day with my 29 year old daughter in the car. She chastised me for over taking a car doing 35 in a 50. Unfortunately I caught up with 3 more cars doing 35 mph, but it wasnt safe to attempt to overtake.

When I explained that the car at the front wouldn't pass thier test, she said I was impatient. No. I dont see why if the road is clear anyone needs to hold up anyone else. Its selfish.

I find that people who dilly dally (don't move off when they should, and/or accelerating too slowly) are a greater problem than people cruising at a slower speed. It messes with the rhythm and flow of driving.

I also find that people booting it onto roundabouts excessively quickly during high traffic has the same effect as it delays other cars from joining while they wait for the car/van on two wheels to get off the roundabout instead of being able to slot in front.

Guess its the 'speed bad' and 'speed is the only cause of accidents' rhetoric that has been hammered in the media for the last 20 years

I've got family members who consider me a maniac for overtaking anyone and drive everywhere at cripplingly slow speeds. They are probably the same ones that flash you for overtaking them.

I've done "orbiting", usually late at night when it's such a blatant....oh don't get me started. I generally can't be arsed these days though.

These days, like you, if I'm already in lane 1 and there an MLM in lane 2, I just carry on, without adjusting speed, and calmly pass them on the inside.
I'm not moving out across three lanes to go round them, that carries its own risks, and I'm not getting into trying to flash them out of the way, because that just causes aggression, they almost always react badly to it, and can even make them attempt to stop you passing. Far easier just to quietly and calmly pass them on the inside, by the time the gormless idiot realises, I'm long gone.

Local FB group a few days ago, there is a 40mph road that goes past the turn off for a high school, the school is nowhere near the actual turn off, the road is also separated by railings from the pavement.

Lady saying that anymore than 20mph down that road is too much and lots agreeing. A few of us have pointed out its sign posted at 40mph, during school opening/closing its impossible to do more than 10mph anyway due to the traffic.

I’ve heard that residents who campaign for reduced local limits go on to make up the majority of motorists done for exceeding the new limits.

Until they decide at that exact moment that now is the time they desperately need to try and speed up and pace match you.

It's usually a case of "I don't want people speeding past MY house, but I'll speed past other houses".

A bit near me has a Victorian road (running right past front doors, not particularly wide, lots of cars parked on the road) which has been extended (same width) to also serve a couple of new estates (closes and cul de sacs, houses set back from the road, no cars parked on the main road). When I'm driving through I can often tell if the car behind me will be turning into the new houses simply because they'll be up my arse as I do 30mph in the Victorian parts, then as soon as we're driving near their estate they'll calm down and drop back.

One of these days I'll pull in, follow them and do a big smokey burnout outside their front door. That'll learn 'em.
