Don't be too sad, that BMW V8 is a complete wrong 'un.

Surely the Martini stripes are from a Le Mans trip?

It's still a no from me!

There's nothing like a bit of hyperbole and a few Clarkson-esque cliches to make a point, is there?

If you went to see this one i have a feeling it would be up a gravel driveway and you'd be welcomed by the sight of prefab homes, a lot of young lads on bikes, a staffie running loose and the owner coming out in an open shirt and leather trilby..

Range Rover L322 - good

Tractor fuel - bad

BMW engine - very bad

Less than 8 cylinders - completely unacceptable

Barry boy additions - No. Just no.

I've had several e39 BMW's with the same engine with which I've covered tens of thousands of trouble free miles, what's your experience of them?

It sounds pretty accurate to me - at 17y, my second car (I crashed the first) ended up with an oval, pancaked exhaust pipe landing on the far side of a humpback bridge that I went over too fast with three mates in the car. I also used to do handbrake turns at any and every opportunity (including at 50mph on wet grass, which was absolutely terrifying and almost ended in a roll).

Agree and 17 year old lads like to show off, and I know that I did. The problem is...we think that we can drive well at 17 too, but the reality is that we can't though!

I crashed my first car twice(the mighty 1982 Skoda Estelle). Once was when I ran into the back of a stationary Jag XJ on a national speed limit B road, and the second time I wrapped it around a lamppost in the wet. That wrote it off, and I was back on my pushbike for the next 6 months or so until I could afford to buy another car.

Not quite, that one is Margaret Thatcher, https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/other-peoples-mo...

Still the only Prime Minister to have had a science degree.

an anecdotal positive story about these.

I bought a TDV8 (3.6l) L322 on 130,000 miles sight unseen from half way around the world for £3k back in 2019 when we moved back to the UK.

type of car was selected purely because we needed something to carry 130Kg of luggage and a family of 3 for our first few weeks in the uk, plus all the other crap that would be needed in setting up a new home half way around the world.

The car was being sold in Hounslow, exactly half way between Heathrow and the serviced apartment that we were staying in for the first 4 nights. This was the only reason for selecting this car over other L322's.

viewed it the morning after we arrived, paid the 50% balance and got some insurance online, then the kind dealer followed us back to teh car rental so i could return the car we hired for the first 48 hours.

Planned to keep the car for 3 months or as soon as it got expensive.

It stayed around for nearly 3 years and never once gave me a fault. I still regret selling it but SWMBO wanted something newer.

moral of the story, there are good ones out there occasionally.

SE is the bottom spec on the early L322, no? Then HSE, then Vogue?

Vogue SE is near the top of the tree, then you have the Westminsters and Autobiography specs if I recall.

We bought a 10 year old 2007 L322 (4.4 V8) Vogue SE with 130,000 under its belt. Other than consumables and a new seat motor it was totally reliable over the following years. It was a daily driver too.

Unfortunately a water leak in the boot (from above rather than under) got into the electrics. It was still drivable as long as you didn't want to listen to anything or use the sat nav. Part of me wanted it fixed at any expense as it was such a great car, but by this point I no longer needed something so large and I had two other cars to choose from, so rather than leave it to sit on the drive and slowly rot, I part-ex'd it - faults declared - to a dealer who had a mate who liked tinkering with old FFRRs.

I'll get another at some point for sure, but certainly not this one.

I love how the title says “Range Rover TDV8” when it’s very obviously a TD6 with the 177 hp engine..

Westminster was the runout top spec at the end of the line, iirc. I think Autobiography came in later too. Possibly with the refresh when they dumped the BMW engines?
