That said, the mpg does sound implausible unless he coasts downhill and gets towed uphill (or the reading is faulty)
It's neither of those.

It wouldn't be sitting on a lifetime average of 35 (Which you cannot reset from new) if it wasn't easily capable of more than 40 on longer journeys.

I drive it in basically the same way as I did my last car - a 2015 530d - and it's about 2-3mpg worse than that in any situation. I was expecting it to use far more fuel than it does. I think you'd need to be driving it quite hard on longer trips to get below 40.

I see no reason why the M240i xDrive won't be just as good, if not better as its a bit lighter.

Yes, I was being flippant, I didn't think you really would coast downhill, or get towed up, but your consumption is at best unusual.

It does beg the question, if you drive your car for maximum fuel efficiency and the same as a 530d, why did you get the M340i?

FWIW, this is Fuelly's findings on the M340i over quarter of a million miles driven:

Just on that subject...
Whenever I do my longest journey that consists of mainly motorway I always use my cruise control and can see the same cars accelerating past then braking then speeding up again, and all the while my feet have often not touched any pedal.
It is quite easy for a lot of drivers to get much worse mpg on the same journey while driving the same model of car.
If you say you can get it then it is guaranteed that I could too. smile

Surely i can't be the only one that doesn't bother to ever look at my MPG....? I just drive and enjoy the car..driving I do use the ECO mode when i remember on the 240 but that's because the M2 doesn't have it....hehe

It actually does coast downhill as it's a mild hybrid which shuts the engine off and uses the high voltage battery in such situations biggrin

Because it's great - a boring efficient and comfortable 3 series when you want that, yet fun and performance orientated on the occasions you want that.

This does support what I am getting though - there are a number of cars with a similar average to mine. Mine is one of the higher averages probably because my mileage split is more towards longer trips than shorter ones.

There's four settings to choose dependent on your way of driving which adjusts the ECU....

ECO = Best fuel efficiency

COMFORT = Normal driving

SPORT = Higher revs/Later gear change

SPORT PLUS = Sport with traction control off and maximum fun...driving

I've never liked eco either, and it is like driving a car with a brick under the throttle for me.

This has been a very useful thread to read at a time I was looking to change.

I have just sold my 718 Boxster and am picking up one of these on Friday.

Tech pack, comf pack, HK hifi, the adaptive suspension, May 24 car with less than 4k miles.

Quite excited to get it now.

The M240i to me seems like a fantastic car that ticks all boxes.
What colour are you getting?
I am undecided which colour I would choose, but have narrowed it down to Zandvoort Blue or Thundernight.
I was having a look at the latter parked up and it was impressive.

These are really appealing to me, currently run a 140. Do spend quite a bit of time pootling a out in eco as I'm driving in town or in heavier traffic. Has a bm3 stage 1 remap which helps (knocked it back to standard for a few weeks and the difference in comfort when driving gently was negligible, but eco was annoying - back on the higher power and eco feels better with no change in fuel consumption). I average 29.2 with a mix of short town journeys and slightly longer commutes - can hit nearly 40 early morning on my way in to work.

Hi Ron

I went for Brooklyn Grey (primer - yeah yeah) with the standard wheels, black interior, near perfect colours and spec for me but alas no sunroof but hey you have to draw a line in the search in the end.

https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/202501168091882...

I do really like the Thundernight but a colleague of mine has a 220 that colour so that plus wifey didn’t like it ruled it out.

I do very much like the red but I haven’t seen one with the smaller wheels and adaptive suspension.

The 240i looks to be a great package compared to six cylinder Cayman, the only other thing I fancied plus it should get up hills when it snows. It’s such good value compared to a 2020 4.0GTS that seem to be £50k upwards depending on mileage, that is just too much for a daily car.

I never used to be a fan of primer grey colours but I see an M2 quite regularly in Brooklyn Grey and I do like it.
I do like the Fire Red as well, and unless you actually see it you cant imagine what it looks like. It certainly looks different to what you see on the configurator on BMW's website.
The only colour I definitely wouldnt have is black.
Enjoy your car when you get it...I'm sure you will love it, and I am just a little envious. biggrin

I am enjoying the car so far, couple of hundred miles and it’s pretty versatile even got a new gate in it for mother’s house.

I am getting to grip with the tech fest.

Can anyone tell me where the locking wheel nut socket is please? Either I just can’t find it or it’s missing.

Thanks in advance
Ed

It's in the bag with tyre inflator in the boot. There is a little pocket on the inflator bag that had the locking nut in it. Should be left hand side of boot.

Very easy to miss. Mind you, tyred do seem to last. Or mine did.
