A long time ago now but I sold my 1968 Snowberry white (with black roof) Austin Mini Cooper S and have always regretted it

1987 Sapphire Black E30 325i Sport.

Really wish I had kept that one.

Mine is a 1991 MK2 Golf GTD in Tornado Red...a rare version of the Golf with a 1.6 intercooled turbo diesel.

I had to sell my GTi 8v because of the insurance costs in the early 90's.

The GTD handled like a horse and cart compared to the GTi so it ended up with a 16v spec suspension kit Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks which as you could imagine transformed it...I put the GTi's teardrop alloys on so it looked pretty good too.

Why I ever sold I don't know as I never had another GTi.

My Evora.

Knee jerk sale when my business had a blip. Sold
It, business picked up almost immediately and so few available in a spec I wanted I had to look elsewhere for a replacement. Also sold for less than it’s worth a decade later which adds to the annoyance.

I really regretted selling a 1988 911 Carrera Sport coupe I owned in the mid 90s, virtually from the moment I drove away in the new E36 M3 I px’d it for.

Funnily enough I spotted it at an event last year and had a chat with the owner. To find it was much enjoyed and cherished has somehow settled the matter in my mind and I can move on!

I failed to mention that I have also owned various High performance cars as well as the Volvo.

Here was my Series 5 FC3s turbo 2 that I had for 3 years

That is a tidy example, if mine had been as clean I probably would have kept it pretty stock.

These 2 spring to mind. The Viper went after 9 and a half years. I'd had tremendous fun with it. Track days. Modded it. Loved it but thought it was time to experience something else. I sold it for more than I bought it for, but then regretted it. Especially now knowing that had I kept it, it's probably worth twice as much frown I moved onto the Hellcat which was just hilarious. That went to raise funds for an apartment abroad, but one purchase fell through then life plans were forced to change. So I went out and bought a Mustang.

Only one I regret not buying. A S15 Spec R. It had a lacquer issue on the roof and we were £500 apart and couldn't come to a deal. It cost him more than that to get it through the MOT a month later so that bugged me a bit.

A few I've sold. A Mini Cooper SPI, Honda Insight and MX5 all because I didn't have space for multiple cars at the time and I liked to chop and change.

My Fabia estate; I'd started a job with an obligatory company car, which I hated (the car, not the job).

My second Yeti; I'd started a job with an obligatory company car, which I hated (the car, not the job).

I have now spotted the pattern.

So which is the one that got away then?

I’ve surprised myself my recalling my first ever car - a 1976 Triumph Spitfire. It was basically a pile of red powder around quite a nice engine. I wish I’d known even a little about cars back then and had kept it and started to look after / restore it.

When it expired, my mates Dad had taken a ropey Lotus Sunbeam as a trade in and offered it to me. But my Mum had a Talbot Sunbeam so I wasn’t having that, it just wasn’t cool. bangheadnono So I never had it but I wish I had. This was 1985.

I also recall being offered a nice DB6 Vantage, for only a little extra cash over my E Type in the late 90s.

I was very keen, but got talked out of it on the basis that the Aston would be expensive to run.

But that truly was the one that got away!

Both. Sold each because I didn't have space for two cars, and I had to have the company car.

I'm quite fortunate that I don't think I've had a car that I've looked back on and regretted selling but a couple I would have back again if it was an option. I'd have another RS Clio 172 as I've had two and they were great fun.

One car I wish I'd made more use of was my old Saab 9-3 V6.

I bought it for regular use but never really got round to it. It was an extremely rare Aero as it had AWD, eDif and was a manual. So like a Turbo-X in all but name and a couple of styling tweaks.

I had a potential buyer for it, got it freshly serviced and MOT'd took it for a last drive and realised what a really great drive it was. Keeping it in the power band and taking it on a few nice winding roads, it was really good fun. What I replaced it with, I prefer overall but that 9-3 was quite an underrated thing, even by me.

I promised myself I d have a Series one RS turbo when they were new in 1985 and I was 11 years old, bought this in 2002 I think-I bloody loved this car, it had a chargecooler and was about 190bhp if I remember correctly.

I really regret selling this mini-it was 1380 cc with some expensive engine mods, I had a dyno print out with it showing 123bhp-it was rapid! I sold it to a guy who came over from France , for 5 grand-what a fool I was!
I’ve got another classic mini now with a 1330 engine but it’s nowhere near as quick ( although far more usable)
