M5 or not an M5?
Discussion
A neighbour has bought a used M5. He has been raving over how great the car is.
It certainly looks the business and I have been really pleased for him that he's upgraded his motor to something really decent.
He bought the car with a private reg M5 XXX, and out of interest thought I'd look it up on the DVLA vehicle check. I turns out the car comes up with 2494CC??
Now either he's telling porkies to everyone or he's been duped in some way.
The said vehicle has M5 badge, top alloys etc and 4 pipes.
I'm not a beemer chap myself - can someone tell me how to spot if this is the real Mccoy?

It's an E39 btw
E39 M5 (1998-2003)
2003 BMW M5
the E39 M5 was not handbuilt at the BMW M GmbH factory; it was produced on the same assembly line as the normal E39 5-series at the Dingolfing factory in Germany.
Introduced in 1998 at the Geneva Motor Show, production did not begin until late October of that year. A total of 20,482 E39 M5s were made from 1998 to 2003. BMW M produced three versions of the E39 M5, the European LHD and RHD versions and the North American specification version.
The E39 M5 had a highly tuned V8 engine based on the M62 engine called the S62, which displaced 4.9 L and produced 400 bhp. The engine featured a 7000 RPM redline, Double-VANOS, which varies the intake and exhaust valves for both cylinder banks, and individual throttle butterflies for each of the cylinders, allowing for a much faster engine response time.
All E39 M5s were equipped with a Getrag Type D six-speed manual transmission
edited to say, how up to date is the DVLA vehicle check? maybe this plate has come from another bmw before it was put onto this car and he bought it.
by the way arent you being a little sad in looking up his details?

IRTA The green eyed monster has visited me now that my neighbour has bought a considerably nicer car than my own. I now have an obsession in doing DVLA searches to try and bring him down a peg or two. I may have caught him out. Please help.

You caught me out!
Not quite - it's really not my cup of char. My concern is more altruistic.
For the E39 M5 I think all the distinguishing marks have been covered: exhaust pipes, wing mirrors, wheels. But to tell from the outside the dials are a dead give away
For anything less than an M5 the dials look like:
whereas an M5 dials look like:
Grey background with dots between numbers
(excuse the big pic it was the only one i could find)
If these have been changed then its had some serious modifications for a 525

Strangly enough my neighbour just got a courtesy car. He was all happy and told me it was an M3. I question the 318i badge on the back and the four doors. to which he replies "well its got a m badge on the gearknob, and the wheels, and the steering wheel"
Great bloke, knows all about cars
