A great loss to the UK as a whole, not simply motoring enthusiasts. Clearly a man of integrity and reason. RIP Paul.

I never knew the chap personally but ive read a few articles and listened to his campaigns on the radio.
Its a great loss to ours and many more the belief that the spin, lies and deceit will continue and sadly we will not have a voice to defend our right to enjoy the pleasure of driving.

I see Paul's site is down - if there is a problem I can help with, please let me know - I run a web hosting company and would be happy to help the cause.

Sad news indeed.

The site isn't down - it's evidently running really slowly. Various people are on it (not me I stress) but things are, in terms of communications within SafeSpeed, a bit chaotic at the moment for obvious reasons.

Thanks to all who have offered help - I've made a note of you - I'm sure someone will contact you if it comes to it!

I would like to know these too. I would like to try to make some time just mark a two second reflection at the time it starts.

I am Claire Armstrong, Paul's partner of 23 years and I am most touched and grateful to all the lovely comments.
Paul's funeral is Wednesday 19th Dec at 12:30 at Inverness Crematorium, should you wish to attend.
I know that he has many supporters here.
Having spoken to the Doctors further, our conclusion is that he had another heart attack. He died almost instantly and was unlikely to have known anything about it. He was due to have a triple by-pass in Jan. He had weakened in the last week, but claimed he was fine.
It will take me forever to come to terms with his loss.
I intend to try to get the website published, and try to keep his brilliant work going. It may take a while, for me to get to grips with everything, so please try to be patient with me. I cannot give you Paul's intelligence or his word ability, but I will try my very best.
Thank you all for the wonderful times that you have given him, in debates and the many discussions.
I have every bit of passion about driving as Paul had, and we had thousands of driving discussions.

A sad loss, I do hope that Pauls tireless work on behalf of the common motorist wasn't a factor in his untimely demise. RIP.

I have posted to Paul here and on his site over the years and found his comments to be well thought out and contained the most important thing that the SCP's and government arguments never had - EVIDENCE!

He was an impressively clever man in my eyes and showed me that one man really could do something against the endless tirade from the government to extort money out of normal tax paying citizens among other things

It was a hell of a shock to find this out from reading another post, very sad day indeed.

Claire, I wish you all the best throughout this difficult time

I have never felt so close or been so very upset over someone I have only ever known over the net. He touched more hearts than he would have known and, for myself, in a way I wouldn't have imagined.

As I think back over some of the posts on Safe Speed, I'm reminded not only of his intellect but also of his great sense of humour.

My thoughts are with you Claire and all family and friends.

I will miss you Paul frown

Love Tony

PS. Thanks for the 10/10 you once gave me wink

Tone.. before I mail the good prof.. I know what you mean. He was so lovely to read as a poster .. even when getting frustrated with lieben gone ..

but even with lieben von..

I had the joke of "Wogan's Janet und John" when Paul replied to him as in "Poor von.. " und "Do you know what to do with statistics? Paulie does... Run von! Run! rofl"

Von... he ist also a gent und a lovely Liebchen whom we also respect - even if we do not see eye to eye on some things. But von understood the light banter as intended as did our most liebster lovebow Paulie laugh

I try to think deeper here as in how we humans play in this new virtual medium in which we voice opinions.. shout .. get involved und in some cases .. very much "worked up"

Maybe not the right thread to voice this. But then Paulie made his indelible mark und commanded our respect by his comments on these internet boards.

I think in the virtual world then - we get to see beyond body language as we read a post. It so difficult to get a "fix" on a personality at times as we all have differing perceptions of "humour". I try to make it seem as if you are really chatting to me by typing how I really sound in the flesh. I do say IST - or rather ISSSCHT und I do say UND .. not your AND. (that was hard to type .. honest! I had to THINK of key I hit. paperbag .. hide under tank as CJ will "maul me" again here.

Paulie had that special something in that you could see the genuine caring in his wording of all those posts.. even when getting .. shall we say a bit "tetchy" with some.. but you know.. spindrift's type..would try the patience of a Saint as well as the Pope und the Archbishops und the Queen..too.

und there was safespeed's "Mr Angry"/basingwerk/mosis/und all the spindrift sockpuppets/ plus the oversilled feuding of Painter v bogeyMann (who intended well und I agreed with some/much at times of what he posted .. but think he must learn to calm und tone it down as he "lose me" und others even more than when I go into

"verbal .. (very crude word almost breaking wind here wink .. use imagination as I am a lady really)" mode wink

(Paulie - wherever you now be - hopefully driving a white BMW at near warp but safe speed winkcloud9 ) close ears ..but I think if you up there listening in.. you are laughing your head off really winkdrink)

But Paulie - he sympathetic but he astute enough not to tolerate fools even if fighting the same battle as .. I mean Humphrey the bogey Mann no disrespect .. but fighting with dignity wins the long term fight. Winston Churchill proved that one to you Brits.. und Paul was perhaps a rebellous "Churchill type" wink

But we still get to know each other so well in these virtual pubs. Sometimes better than we know virtual und tangible pals as we read printed opinions without the "fibble of the body language" We have our ups und downs .. tiffs .. huffs as we would over the garden fence as neighbours.. but still we rally round with posting reassurance if this virtual buddy has a problem which we think we can help with in our completely "faceless" but FULL of INNER SOUL und thus REAL without the make-up .. lippy.. photo-shoppe airbrushed or faked acting body language personae.

Paul said what he thought .. with logic .. incisive reason.

I think that why he left such an indelible mark on us all - even spindrift .. Mongiblets und Dick.. und Mary too!

I was a bit too "forward" on the SPL post I made. I should have waited for Ted to check replies to e-mails first. But I still think folk should make donations in lieu of the price of a bouquet either to the Safespeedv2 fund to keep Paul;s work alive ( VERY IMPORTANT) or think of spitting evenly between a charity (which I think British Heart Foundation given how Paulie died here) und the campaign funding. Even with this split .. to me it make und add value to a very worthwhile life as led by Paulie Smith und stick the right Stinfinger at the establishment too. whistle

I am very sad to hear of Paul's death.

Have heard him on the radio and TV, and PM'd him in the past with KSI's.

Unbelievable to think he is gone...Hope the Safespeed campaign continues.

Very sad to hear this. The Top Gear office would like to pass on their condolences. We used Paul's depth of knowledge a number of times over the years. A great loss to the speed debate.
Paul so wanted to go around your track !
He was convinced that he would do well.
Perhaps sometime you might let me do so ? I fully intend to keep the campaign going, even though my knowledge of the figures is nothing like Paul's. I can learn but it takes time.

I am extremely touched and heartened by all the wonderful comments Paul's is smiling all around us, he would be chuffed to the core. He absolutely loved the challenge. Paul told me the other day that the dft have now removed all mention of speed cameras from their website ! What an achievement.
I am still in shock even though I knew how ill he was. He would not have wanted to die in hospital and it appears that it was extremely quick, another heart attack, fatal if it occurred before the triple by-pass.
I intend to carry on his work - get the website published and especially the 100 Word Highway Code. Which we spent some time on, but it was his work, we just chatted about what was basic and cruical that helped develop a driver ....
