I want to read well written articles and see good pics of expensive cars, and thats why i buy evo.

The Maserati 250F ring article was inspired.

Thinking i need to investigate octane as well though

What we need is a magazine that sits between Practical Classics and Evo.
yes
It's called Practical Performance Car.

I stopped reading Evo a while back. Whilst I like the photos, columns, and the narrative to some extent, the repeated cliches really started to grate and I constantly felt rather belittled by the value of the cars they were selling. It always felt rather condescending - "you'll never afford this, mere mortal" rolleyes.

PPC may not have the budget or the narrative skills but it's a good honest mag showing cars I can afford, written by guys who get their hands dirty. thumbup. Perhaps there is room for a magazine inbetween the two, more in the style of Evo but with lower value cars, but although I might buy it I'm not sure many others would...

Perhaps that is what the new "Performance Car" mag will be about?

I'll definitely buy it

ECOTY 2001,2,3,4,5,6,7 and next year 8.:

We get car. First impressions nasty, then nice, then nasty.

Drive to france. A, B an C are driving down. We meet D there. We get lost.

Tuck into some food. All lovely. Early start but when the car park is as good as it is then no problems.

We drive off. A comes back, tells B how good something is. A is right. XYZ car is free. I take the keys whilst i have a chance. Drive of my life, great road blah blah. We stop for food. Some nice beers. Drive some more. Stop for dinner, lovely name drop on cafe. Photographer needs some more light shots. We drive some more, light, roads, controls: lovely.

Next day. Revisit car. Find out its a million times better than first found. Lots more contradictory statements.

Porsche wins. The end.

Rinse and repeat for ever more.

Don't buy it then.

Find it odd that people hate on the fact that Porsche's often win. maybe it is because they meet the criteria better than any other car (except on the years that they haven't won like Ford GT, Fezza etc etc)

I'd like to see a group test of all the winners (mainly Porsches) in The Knowledge. I know it's comparing Apples and Oranges but it would still be interesting.

EVO is ok, but not so good that it stops me fannying about with the settings on my phone and playing Sonic while I have a poo. I can't remember the last EVO I rushed through like I did in the past.

Was Ecoty 01 the one with the Punto Sporting, 306 GTI & RB5? That was one of my fave issues. I even found some scans of it on the net after I sold mine. Makes me feel really now, though

Evo Car of the Decade - NSX Type R, M3, 550, Elise, PB5, Porsches, Pagani.

The fezza won from memory. About 3 years back (was cleaning my room and found the back issues).

I buy Evo, not for car buying advice as most of the cars are unaffordable, or unavailable in Australia, but for the narrative, the journey, the sense of being there.
Its the only one I buy to...occasionally get 'Motor' but its only ever about Falcodores.

The other choices include such publications as 'Street Commodore' and 'Ute'....nah i think I will buy Evo!!

I live in oz also and you're right, the mags here are all about Commodores v Falcons. It gets very boring.

I never thought i'd live somewhere where a 205gti made my head turn. Nice rare sight here...

What about Wheels v Motor. I cant work out which is better.

I don't actually buy any Aussie car mags. Lived here all my life and they bore me. So very, very much.

That question is like asking is a broken leg or a broken arm better?

Saw a 205 the other day actually! I bet its owner doesnt even know what he has got...maybe he does, I'm just bitter..

Wheels and motor are near as damn it the same. Great for something cheap ($8 I think)and to spend 10 minutes reading on the bog but every single edition has got a new Holden or Ford on the cover and any other cars they review are compared to said Creakydoor's.
Their COTY and PCOTY and BFYB things are just crap...its always the $80,000 Dunnydoors that win over cars half the price with similar performance.
Maybe its just 'cos I am from the UK but they dont cover enough of the latest Euro cars that are out...maybe they are scared it will make the aussie manufacturers look outdated and like they are pedalling rebadged, korean shite to the aussie public wink

There's a mint 205 near me. Black, standard wheels, brembos, fully prepped for tarmac rally style stuff. He knows what he has. But many don't. Really want to pick up a neglected one in mechanical good condition. We can dream.

Motor/Wheels seems to have an irrational dislike of brilliant cars like the Elise. I'm guessing because they make Aussie cars look bloated, overweight and underdone. Evo's approach to the HSV range seems so much more balanced.

That's the problem - the tagline is 'the thrill of driving' yet in the end they always go for utter sophistication and capability over raw thrills that the driver actually is able to enjoy - at least partially - in more or less daily driving conditions. I feel since the days of Performance Car. Evo's criteria have diverged from the scope of the regular driving enthusiast (i.e. the moderately talented bloke/lass who has a job, family and other stuff that precludes him/her taking their car to the Alps and back on a regular basis or rag their P&J to within an inch of its life on track) to the point that they have become something of an irrelevance.

I have become bored with car magazines too. Especially EVO and TG. I prefer to surf the net to get the info I want. Multiple perspectives, as much detail as required, lively debate and owner web-sites for issues and faults. I appreciate the tactile / feel of a magazine but I think the new generation will spurn them for portable on-line richness and diversity.

Do they do a book just of their photographs?

I find the editorial tedious and self congratulatory in the main but the photography is epic.

Generally it is pretty good, but WTF is this fad for things that are out of focus in the main, with a tine bit in focus..!??!

I went through a phase a while back where I got a tad bored of Evo, so to ease the commute I ventured into other magazines for a bit as a comparison. Motorsport is a bloody good read, with interesting articles and technical stuff, but it’s not exactly road car territory (in the main). Octane can be good, but Car was just dire. To that end, I’ve concluded that Evo is probably still my personal favourite – it’s just a shame that they can’t;

a) Deliver it in a timely manner, because
b) They continue to fail in updating my address

Looks like cancelling and re-subscribing might be the solution, but it’s PITA. Still, third time lucky on the “free gift” rolleyes

With regards to the photography its the Zonda test they did in Italy, just amazing, best car photographs of all time.

Not tried Octance, may give it a go.
