My local ford dealer owns an RS500 in black still 100% original, its up for sale at a faintly ridiculous price but everytime I drive past it makes me pine for an unmolested cossie, even a sapphire would be nice (especially a 4x4 in black).

Possibly the only car I can think of that would ever tempt me into buying an old car as a long term ownership prospect.

I wuld say that although the E39 M5 is a superb car the Cosworth has more of a hero type following for more people.

Supercar for the working man and all that.........

I used to love these, when I was about 10-11 years old we used to drive past Andy Rouse's workshop in Binley, Coventry on the way to school every day.

You used to see the cars being worked on inside some days, managed to have a look around the workshop one day and have a sit in one of the racing cars.

I always remember when my dad come home in his back in 1987.

He got home from work, came into the house and asked me if I could give him a hand with something from the car. We walked outside and sat on the driveway was D89PTM, a gleaming white 3 door. A total surprise.

What a machine. He ran in for 2 years and nearly 100k miles with no problems whatsoever. Then he ran one Sapphire after another, which were nothing but trouble and both ended up being nicked and burnt.

I recall being in it heading south down the A1 just before hatfield tunnel, racing an 80's yuppie in a 944 turbo. We got up to about 140mph (which, as a 12 year old at the time, was highly exciting), and the look on his face was priceless - his uber german machine couldn't shake waht looked like (to the untrained eye) a boggo sierra with a Ripspeed special rear wing. Marvellous. PArt of the cars appeal was, certainly for the first year or so, no one knew anything about them...

RS Cossie is one of my favourite all time cars and would definitley fullfill a space in my lottery garage (in between the series 1 RS Custom and an RS200)

What sort of weight are they dragging around? 200bhp in one of those is surely more effective than 200bhp in a lardy scooby?
I know other people have already replied to this post but......

rolleyes Don't like Scoobies then eh.

In a similar comparison, my 300bhp lightweight Scooby is more effective than a Ford Sierra 1.6LX.

My Dad had one for a weekend as a potential company car. I remember him pulling out to overtake something and me thinking were were going to have a head on collision with the car coming the other way. Then suddenly WOOSH and we were past and back in no problem. What a fantastic car.

In the end he picked a Lancia Thema Turbo as he said the Cossie was too much of a go-kart and he did a lot of motorway driving.

even though an impreza of a decent standard spec, has more than 200bhp, and the weights between the two arent very different really, you cant really call the scooby lardy can u?

I don't think I'd consider anything other than an old car as a long-term ownership prospect. Modern cars are packed with such ridiculously complicated technology that they will be totally unservicable once they lose manufacturer support due to being more than a few years old.

I can see the conversation now...

Customer: "My car seems to have stopped working"
Service Manager: "How old is it?"
Customer: "Five years"
Service manager: "We discontinued the patches for the software on that model two years ago. You'll have to buy a new one".
Customer: "Sod that, I'm off to buy a 20 year old car instead. There'll always be someone with overalls and tools who can fix that".

Never been in a 3 door but my Dad had a Sapphire 4x4 cossie out twice for demo over a whole weekend. As a young boy who loved Cosworths I was over the moon.

We picked up the second one (Magenta I think it was) from Hartwells at Botley and when we were exiting the A40 at the Thame exit he was obviously going far too fast and we spun 360 and landed on the verge. Luckily only a number plate and my Dads pride were hurt but they were awsome cars.

In the end he couldnt live with the image of the car so he never brought one.

This is the reason why I got an early Classic WRX. It's only 1220kg kerb weight with 240PS as standard (mine's pushing about 255-265bhp at 1.1bar). It was the best power/weight 4WD available... And I mean a genuine 50/50 steady-state 4WD - none of this tail-led 35/65 shenanigans (may as well have RWD). Even the 'smaller' Sunny/Pulsar GTI-R hatch is slightly heavier (and only has 220PS to boot).

I'd still love an RS500 in Glacier(?) White, though cloud9

Fantastic! Every single nut and bolt of the car is legendary.

I still remember my first run in a Cosworth like it was yesterday.

Shame on you who think it is rubbish / has no class!
