At 900kgs and 320bhp from the Essex 3000, Scims are good cars, but only after getting past the niggles of the mass produced road car.
?? 900kg and 320bhp. A Std one must be a bit over a tonne with the Massively heavy Essex and where does the 320bhp come from. An Essex made 138bhp in a 3.0 Capri and less than 20 more with a good exhaust in a Scim or a TVR 3000M (I had one with gas flowed heads and I doubt that had a true 175bhp). A VERY good Essex would be mid 200 bhp in NA form (VERY VERY Good one).

Ging's must be a tad over 1000kg but must have about 250-260bhp but huge torque compared to any Essex (270ft/lbs at a guess - it IS a Fun Ride;)).

You going to be at the MG Silvertone Festival with yours next weekend?

Full Race Spec engine on a single carb can see 260-270 bhp, and with triple webers and see a proven 320bhp. Problem is it cost 9K for it yikes

I'am at Goodwood nesxt week end running my AMOC trakday and Sprint, then at Silverstone running the Horsefall Meeting. Car will be ready by the end of the season or so. May get out once or twice.

as for the fella who suggested i was only ten at the time, dont really understand what your getting at there mate???
I think he means that age and experience would tell you that if the car's already running when you go to view it, it probably means it doesn't start from cold very easilywink
Heh. That's what I assumed he meant as well - although perhaps said a little indelicately.

Impressed with the 900 quid insurance, not bad going.
ahhhh, i understand now, however at the time i was aware of this trick of the trade. but the old girl for all her faults never failed to start fortunately. as for the insurance i had a years no claims bonus at the time, gained from a 1994 1.0 nissan micra tropic! but still even now seems like a hell of a quote, was only TPFT mind with no windscreen cover or anything else for that matter. IIRC it was norwich union direct who came up with the goods!

I always thought the old Scimitar was a car probably worth getting sorted.
Well balanced look about it, and practical too.

In their day they were known to have overheating problems, but a pretty COOL vehicle otherwise.

Total rebuild, sensible bits fitted, big V8...nice. smile

The X plate will be an SE6b and will have the 2.8 Cologne V6, that does seem to be a keen price.
Buy a nice Capri with that Cologne inside it instead. Yummy lick

a friend of mine had one of these as his first car, it was hearing aid beige, with a light turd brown velour interior. His was manual and as i remember far quicker than it should have been.. we all lived through it, but only just. It was a st car, but we all loved it.

Its a 3.4 litre engine. The figures I have seen claim 312bhp at the flywheel.

the blue car in the vid is Bev Fawkes Blue Thunder with a Cosworth GAA Essex based ex-European touring car engine homologated by Ford Germany iirc. only 200 blocks were cast if memory serves. as said previously, its 3.4L, oh and quad cam to boot!
Bev sold that engine from the car and then swapped it to a twin turbo'd 'modern' Cologne Cosworth 2.9 V6 and ran that for a couple of seasons. rumour has had it, that he could be tempted back out in Blue Thunder although its been rumoured for the last few seasons

A DOHC GA has next to nothing in Common with a true Boat Anchor Essex (I can say that cos I had one;)), A GA is VER VERY Special.

yes, agreed, essentially a cossie race motor with feck all to do with the scrap mans delight, the essex. i believe the essex' is great for holding tarpaulins down in the wind though
the GA does fetch good money now (if you can find one) within the historic circles

It may be a boat anchor but if you spend enough money with John Wade or another Essex specialist you will get something that can achieve 300bhp.

Indeed - you have to spend 10 - 15k to get a full race TR4 / 6 engine;) they do not have alot in common with the base engine bar the block and head casting (and my 4 does not even have that!). A GA is all Allo isn't it? Or is just the basic block very vaguely related to the Essex. They made next to no power in the Base Capri's / Granada - but cars weighed alot less then;)
