Sorry, but I think I smell some BS in this article with regards to engines.. You can't practically engineer a car, least of all a sports car to use 2 utterly different engine configurations. Flat 6 and straight 4? I don't think so..

P,
Not to mention what adding a Porsche engine would do to the price of the car. I figure that if this car is put into production, I wouldn't be surprised if the turbo 4 banger is the only engine available. If it sells well, then maybe they'll also have a VR6 version. Another possibility would be the 3.6 V6 installed transversely.

I do find it amusing that when the Boxster was introduced in the late 90's, the ads (at least here in the US) made it a point to link it to the 550 Spyder, stating that the Boxster was its successor. No mention was ever made of the 914. Clearly, they do not want the 914 to be associated with Porsche. Now that they're considering a 914 successor, it will be a VW, which is yet another reason to keep a Porsche engine out of it.

Promising

Xjsjohn's view in my opinion is valid

whats wrong with a track focused minimalist elise challenger from porsche

Given the current petrol situation its the right move but it will be trashed by all the pubtalkers as another "hairdressers" car. A light car in the Elise mode would be brilliant but... all the masses are interested in these days is power and 0-62 numbers. They want fat cars with 19" wheels, cup holders etc.

I wish them all the best with this one.. but sadly, like the Cayman a lighter, budget version of the 911 will be sgged off by the press.

I for one, hope they give it a go

Was'nt there supposed to be a TT 'speedster'coming soon, this would not leave a very big niche twixt TT and Boxster for a new 914.

Are you serious? Porsche might not still be trading if it were not for the success of the 944 / box you spinach.

I honestly believed that the Boxster/Cayman was the successor to the 914? How about a front engine rear wheel drive track focussed car instead, similar to a 968CS...thats what I'd rather see.

Agreed. If they make this 914 successor (and I agree with previous comments that that’s what the Boxster’s supposed to be) people will moan on about how it's under engineered so as not to steal sales from the Boxster/Cayman - which is supposedly under engineered not to steal sales from the 911 blah blah (rather than just accepting they’re different propositions)

They should make a small, lightweight, front engined, rear drive car that's affordable. A genuine addition to the existing line-up.

P,
Beat me to it. The VAG engines would be very compact, transverse, tall 4 pots with a transverse gearbox. The flat six is longitudinal and has an inline gearbox so would need an entirely different chassis.

Well I think your post was ambiguous to say the least but I apologise for flaming.

yes If they do it, I suspect it'll be transverse mid engined so as to make most use of existing drive train layouts. Do VAG have any small petrol engines engineered for longitudinal (non-quattro) installation?

Hopefully we'll see a transverse mid mounted VR5 or VR6 engine, but I suspect it'll end up being a straight 4 if it happens.

ETA: The 1.4 TSFi or whatever it's called would be an interesting choice if they do try and keep it light.

How much slower can a Boxster get before it's slower than a GTi?

Porsche Boxster 2.7
245 bhp
0-62 mph 6.1 sec

Golf GTi
197 bhp
0-60mph 6.7 sec
You could at least quote like for like performance figures....

IIRC Golf ~140mph Boxster ~160mph.

SS7
PS Boxster 0-60 ~5.7secs, and its about to get a 2.9l engine upgrade

Performance figures, smorformance figures. Which would you rather have? I FWD mundane Golf (yes they're mundane looking even in R32/GTI guise) or a crisp handling, sweet sounding, mid engine roadster. You ain't comparing apples with apples.
