I think in this case it was more the added drivetrain bits that were holding the Audi back, and I guess between 100 and 200 km/h weight still plays a significant part. After all 315 vs 270(ish) bhp isn't a huge difference to begin with.

A tuner once told me when I asked after the wisdom of building 400+ bhp FWD drag racers, that the Scoobies of similar power only had an advantage on the first 1/8th mile, than the FWD car would claw back the time it lost on the starting line due to it suffering much smaller transmission losses.
Then we'll get into the "now follow through the windy bits" argument.

At that point I'd rather have the RS2, which is a full-house quattro after all.

I have a vague plan to buy another RS2, one in need of love, and take heaps of weight out of it to make it into something more like the 968 Club Sport that it shares bits with. The standard RS2 carries a lot of heavy luxuries.

Now that sounds like a nice plan Dickysmile

My mapped/exhaust RS2 was RR'd at 370bhp and it felt fiercly quick upto 100.

Not sure it would be any more capable than an Impreza in the fabled 'twisties' however.

There are far too many factors to weigh up.

4WD obviously gives you an advantage in terms of standing starts.
The RS2s BHP AND Torque to weight ratios comes into play once moving which will quickly be replaced by aerodynamics.

Personally, I like my 5 pot quattro for its ability to corner like it's on rails and the fact that I can put the power down very early. It's also not shy in a straight line. smile

I have been fortunate to drive some of the quickest and most potent cars in the world during my career. Indeed I'd have to say that there are a handful of cars which have made me shake a little with nerves after coming back from some very quick test drives, the only things I've driven that are quicker/scarier are a RUF 993 Turbo S and an XJ220 and a TVR Cerberea 4.5

I agree with no2.I get the jitters every time and it is the only car i have driven that I need to take a bottle of water with me ;you would never believe a car would make you so thirsty!

Agree with the sentiments about this stunning car, particularly it was this era where real soulful cars were made that had that extra something and good build quality to boot.

I was very tempted to buy an RS2 when looking for a fast practical estate. I read some articles and one in particular grabbed my attention. It was written a fairly long time after the car's original manufacture date, a comparison test with another estate car (though slightly rarer). Although I only drove the other car in the test, I would love to experience the RS2. The other car was the M5 Touring (E34). Very different ways of generating a thrilling and involving drive, 340 horses to the rear wheels with no driver aids of any sort and a sonorous straight six sound track to accompany the drama. I can vouch for the effectiveness of this rare beast.

Back to the comparison, I think the test really couldn't find anything to split them, both equally devastatingly effective but in quite different manners. I opted for the rear drive option having decided that as I was lucky enough to already have a brilliant four wheel drive turbo car in the guis of an Lancia Integrale Evoluzione, I should experience some rear wheel drive action, otherwise I would no doubt have opted for the 5 cylinder tubrocharged madness in this article!

Happy motoring guys!

I am very lucky to own one.

During the summer i was have a rather enjoyable drive with a 997 in Norfolk and Suffolk. He kept on trying to get rid of me but it wasn't happening. When we stopped side by side at a set of traffic lights he asked What the hell is that. He could believe that an old Audi Estate could keep him so honest. That is the beauty with this car.

Some banker in a cab tip? Almost all 'real' Porsche enthusiasts would recognise an RS2 (and the Porsche connection), especially if its blue!

I was fortunate enough for my dad to own a Blue RS2 for most of 2007 into the beginning of this yr. At 23 I have owned a number of relatively fast cars, currently an E36 M3 ACS but when we had the RS2 i had an E36 M3 3.0 which I had owned for a couple of yrs. I had always been a fan of the RS2 and couldnt wait to get driving it to see what it was like but wasnt expecting it to be as fun as the M3. How wrong i was.....the shunt in the back you get when the car comes on boost is unbelieveable!!

I used the car a few times during the summer for shows and a few cruises as well and people just didnt get why on earth a 23yr old was driving around in an Audi 80 Avant - one person actually said as he laughed 'you can put the stickers on it mate but it'll never be a Porsche!!' I smiled and opened the bonnet smile I took the car to a RR Day for Jap cars and there were a few smirks when i reversed the car into the garage to get tested....the smirks didnt last very long when the car ran 313bhp, everyone asked what on earth i had done to it and were very surprised to realise it was standard.

The other reaction is from those in the know which is ultimate respect for the car.

A truly great car. It did like to drink fuel quite heavy though....

The problem with Porsche's nowadays is that they aren't always driven by Porsche Enthusiasts. Not like the good old days.

Haha that was funny,
i had a 'friend' that critised the fact that i bought a porsche key chain for my RS2,by saying that i only did it for posing!!!
That came from a person that transformed his dad's A4 into a track car+ fitting every sticker available on the car's surface as an indication of the aftermarket stuff the car carries...

I really fail to understand who is the poser here... an owner of a car that was completelly upgraded by porsche itself,or an owner that displays even the most simple aftermarket mod on his car, thinking somehow they might sponsor him or something...

In any case, the RS2 is a car made by an alliance of technical experience. Also it seems that audi is not that fond of the model, and if you go to Germany, the audi museum doesnt have it.You may find it in the audi garage basement along with the rs2 sedan(one of 2 or 4 ever manufactured)

Im not taking the michael out of the reviewer but the part about the "why am I not moving" and being told to drop a cog and keep the turbo spooling was a bit of a no brainer.I love the car and am now going dreaming over in the classifieds.

I was lucky enough to own M120 MJB for five years. Don't dream - do it. Much as I love the current motor, the RS2 was very special and definitely my car of a lifetime so far. Bought her with 120k on the clock and sold her with close to 165k on the clock. Fantastic Q car - even in lairy RS blue with black leather and blue alcantara interior.

Now you've got me all nostalgic cloud9

No, Porsche only undertook the project on the basis that the Coupe was not made, as they saw it as a potential threat to sales.

There is one saloon, which was the development mule, owned by the Dr in Germany. Its probably been crushed now though.
They did build 2x Audi RS2 Saloons, 1 was indeed for the Dr and the other resides in their Museum of treasures along with their other special cars that are rumoured to exist.

There was a rumour that Audi built 1x RS2 coupe themselves, this may or may not reside along with the Group S rally coupe that recently surfaced that had allegedly been crushed in the '90s and some at Audi hid that car away from the board of directors.

Who knows with Audi...

Great story. I remember the m3 acs you had, very special car. The rs2 however is a dream car of mine.
