Good work, when I was a kid living in deepest Mid-Wales the same thing happened to my dad's Land Rover on the way home from the pub.He had the same idea as Johnny Foreigner in the clip,so he removes the bonnet (and leaves it at the side of the road)convinces my mum (who had'nt got a licence) to drive and jumps up on the front bumper, holding onto the top hose with his left hand.
The inevitable happened when they were only 1/4 of a mile from home, luckily my mum missed him and a few grazes and two broken ribs were the only damage. My brother and I (12 and 14 respectively) were sent out the next morning to fix the cable and retrieve the bonnet!
Luckily the only Police around were undercover hippies living in teepees-happy days!

Mid 1908's Knowsley Safari Park hosted round of the real RAC.

My memory is not that good but I think that Hannu Mikkola knock a wheel off and his co driver sat on the bonnet to balance the car to service.

Can't find anything on Youtube or remember the co drivers name......so over to you.

A story always present at family reunions is the day where the throttle cable of their Hillman Imp snaped and dad at the wheel, uncle over the back seat, managed to bring him home.

Great stuff. I remember seeing an Audi Quattro works team years ago when they smashed off a front wheel/strut assembly. The co. driver climbed onto the boot section to counter balance the opposite corner and get out of the special stage.

I know Mikkola's getting in a bit now, but how old does that make him? biggrin

I was chatting to Armin Schwartz who told a similar story. His throttle cable snapped on a stage. After taking his co-driver's shoe lace, he drove 40km using the lace as a hand throttle and everything else with the other hand!

If I remember correctly, he didn't do too badly!!

interesting that the driver considered throttle control more important that the steering. If it was me I'd ahve made my co drive get in the bonnet!

I can't believe they don't run with 2 throttle cables as standard. I do!
It would probably be Fly by wire wouldn't it? I know the WRC cars are.
