To overcome this Aston was forced to create bigger valves and lower-lift camshafts, but then the engineers realised that these changes could be applied to the standard V8 to create even more power. Throw in 481DA carburettors and suddenly the company had a 5.3-litre V8 producing almost 380bhp, an incredible figure for the 1970s.
A lower lift cam will NOT give you more torque neither will it gives you more power.
If this is true, there would be another reason for going lower on the lift, such as because they had to go ower on duration also for reasons of torque or some other constraint.
Mechanical fuel injection like the old Astons had is superior to carbs and I heard the reason they abandonned it was because they never paid Bosch the bills in time.

Been "lucky" enough to own 2 Vantages.

Believe me, dreaming about owning one is much better than owning one! Having said that, I still have a hankering!

I was told, but do not know if it is true that late injection cars (possibly only V8 and not Vantage) used two Ford Cosworth injection systems cobbled together somehow.

Perhaps someone knows.

I have to say that, whilst that is a great car the Aston that always does it for me is the 600 bhp brute that is this:

A beautiful brute of a car. I trust Oli wore a blazer for the test-drive, what what?

Personally though, I'd plump for what it eventually evolved into:

V8 Vantage 600 Le Mans. Nice.

I see this car as an iron fist in a velvet glove.
Like a heavyweight boxer in a perfectly cut Savile Row suit.

Charming, but with more than a hint of menace.
Didn't someone else said the exact same words in a magazine.
These cars are becoming more attractive as time goes on, like the XJS.

The only thing I can think of which that would be is the Vantage (twin screw) which has a development of the Ford DDC IV ignition system. Presumably your friend assumed they would use two of them together with different timming- not implausable and not impossible, as the vantage can run with only one of cylinders, as a sort of 275bhp half-vantage

he V8 also had Bosch and Weber-marelli fuel injection systems

Yeah, quite possible. I tend to read everything I find about these monsters. If I've absorbed this and then spouted it as my own, then I'll happily give credit to any magazine that did say it.

This was the car I lusted after in my teens. You can keep your Italian straight-jackets; high-performance armchairs are where it's at (and will always continue to find my favour!)

Just to clear another point up: a blazer or moustache is not essential. Wearing a tie is preferrable, however

Absoulte monsters to drive.

Gear change and clutch can be difficult to get used to.

Having said that...when I drove one as part of my classic car treasure hunt it was unforgetable.

I seem to remember 80 in 2nd was easy.
