You can't tax a car with e-mailed or faxed documents: Clicky

Insurance certificates and cover notes

These are usually a printed or laser-printed document, or a plastic credit card style document.

The following documents aren't acceptable:

* policy schedule
* renewal notice
* receipt for payment
* amended certificate or cover note - unless stamped or initialled by the insurer
* ‘legal protection’ policy certificates
* foreign certificates
* photocopies or faxes
* insurance certificates downloaded directly from the internet by the policy holder
* Green Card (International Motor Insurance Card)

Well I have done it three times in the past year without any problems at all. Just because something is technically "not possible" doesnt mean it wont be acceptable when you are actually in the post office.

Indeed I suspect presenting them with an e-mailed copy printed on proper paper with a good printer will not be a problem. However turning up with one printed on fax roll paper is going to end in a refusal.

They obviously mistook them for the originals then. Don't rely on it.

I taxed my car today with a printed out copy of my insurance that flux emailed to me. Their policy is not to post docs unless you request them, so I suspect it's not a requirement otherwise everyone would be in the same boat.

I wouldnt rely on it - but it is very common now to use a home-printed certificate.

Tip - fold the piece of A4 in 3, liek you do when you put it in a letter, and print it a few days early so it looks suitably 'aged'. You could even take it down the post office in a ripped white envelope.

ecarinsurance don't send out any documents at all, everything is electronic. i have taxed a car using this and another time/ins. co. using a faxed cover note.
