He has approx 50 cars on his premises at any one time, that's what 'in stock' means.

I never said TH was an average trader and I never said my Dad was either.
With 50 in stock does he have a website?

Does he have retail premesis? If so how does he sustain them on only 50 cars a year? Thats going to be a very low turnover let alone operating profit?

Or does he flog them from his driveway, in which case, good for the DVLA?
Why on earth does that matter ?

He has been a successful trader for 30+ yrs and 50 x say £5k profit = a nice little business thanks.
So you dodge the question of wether you sell from home or not, which means you do sell from home. So where is the website for his premises? adverts etc. One things for sure you aint got a legit business if you cant even get a set of trade plates and wont purchase a trailer. You must think people on this site are stupid,a genuine business would have no trouble at all obtaining trade plates. Why dont you just tell it like it is, you had a nice little sideline going selling from home, but youve been caught out and you dont like it, so you came on here to see if anyone could help you out, and a few questions and you resort to insults, same as everyone nowdays, its ok as long as you are getting what you want.
No my point was it DOESN'T MATTER and that Tom Hartley also deals from home.

I'd suggest any home that can take 50 cars is possibly one worthy of selling from.

Care to make any more stupid comments ?

Get back to cleaning cars.
Dont wanna get involved here but where did you get the "cleaning cars" idea from? the guy is a property dealer!! lol

Yes but it DOES MATTER. It matters a great deal.Just because youre indifferent to the law, doesnt mean the authorities are. The worthiness of a property to hold 50 cars is irrelevant as opposed to the need to satisfy the relevant authorities.

FFS no it doesn't.

You simply don't read or comprehend anything do you.

THE ONLY REASON IT WAS REFUSED BECAUSE HE DEALT IN TOO FEW CARS.

(Now read and repeat the above sentence 10 times - has it sunk in yet ?)

Hence the OP and following people, who have a clue, suggesting that reason is, as I suspected, rubbish, he has called them and is awaiting a call back.

I tell you what, as you are so bright and clearly a wealthy property dealer I'll bet you £1000 that:

I have the letter stating the reason for refusal
That he has over 50 cars in stock, including a £200k Bentley
That he is VAT registered
And hell I'll even throw in that he has planning permission

We're only an hour away from Notts so do you fancy putting your money where your mouth is ?

To allow business use of a residential property I should think, specifically selling cars wink

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a trailer? Not sure if this has been mentioned at all.

Not really the done thing to tow a customer around on a trailer instead of letting them test drive it.

Planning permission to grow sprouts.

WTF do you think ?

Have you never ventured out of Notts there are hundreds of car dealers legally and successfully dealing from their homes.

I suspect you are a 'property developer' who has once bought a flat at auction.

Some of us have Degrees in it so if you need any advice let me know.

(Yes I'm talking about sprouts again)

Or perhaps BSc Hons Residential Development.

(For a grand I'll even throw in a peek at my certificate for that too)

For the record, i have been 'Trading' in secondhand motor vehicles from my drive/home(albeit part-time) for around 20 yrs or so.
I have a motor traders insurance policy & all my accounts go off each financial year to my accountants (i do not have trade plates but i used to have a trailer rolleyes)
All my dealings the DVLA is aware of and obviously customs & revenue are happy.

That is it, running a P/T business as a sole trader, simple, no problem, easy, all above board.

You should have taken a course in anger management instead of your degree.

As far as I was aware, so long as you have planning permission, trade insurance for all of the vehicles and are able to accommodate those vehicles on your property then you can happily trade, perfectly 'above board'.

50 Cars per year is a fair amount-1 per week roughly-and if there is VAT registration I can't see why the DVLA would refuse trade plates... Perhaps they require clarification in regards to the nature of the business?

Throwing your degree around and constantly, referring to the 200k Bentley in stock and offering a wager of 1k does seem quite reactionary however... It seems odd that you've been wound by all of this, I'm guessing you're fairly young?

If he has planning permission and there are no charges on his house deeds preventing him trading from home there'll be business rates to pay.
