Yea he needs to calm down. The website request still stands though. He wont get far in business being so confrontational.

As far as I was aware, so long as you have planning permission, trade insurance for all of the vehicles and are able to accommodate those vehicles on your property then you can happily trade, perfectly 'above board'.
If he has planning permission and there are no charges on his house deeds preventing him trading from home there'll be business rates to pay.
I must confess to having little previous knowledge of business, but I have found some very useful information thanks to your post. The subject of business rates is actually quite interesting in itself, since there are plenty of variables that can effect how much business rate you are required to pay.

I imagine that if the trade premises is part of the main house building, then you would pay business rates on the portion declared as the trade premises and council tax for the rest of the household?

I would expect so but like you I am not sure. With my house there is a charge on the deeds that no business can be run from my premesis, I would expect the same to apply to the rest of the houses in my street as the land is all ex Crown Estate although there are a few businesses being run from some of them.

Given the grief that's being thrown at the OP here, who was just asking a question, IMO... My company sells Classic Cars, alongside much more mundane stuff, and in my experience it may be worth considering that pre-73 classics are RFL free. Therefore it doesn't cost anything to tax them, even if they are on SOR. It's just a bit of hassle to ask the owner to tax it. Free. Therefore the need for trade plates is negated.

FWIW, before the lynch mob rounds on me, I have trade plates and a trailer. And accounts. And premises.

PS: OP - is your father based in the Home Counties?

FFS no it doesn't.

You simply don't read or comprehend anything do you.

THE ONLY REASON IT WAS REFUSED BECAUSE HE DEALT IN TOO FEW CARS.

(Now read and repeat the above sentence 10 times - has it sunk in yet ?)

Hence the OP and following people, who have a clue, suggesting that reason is, as I suspected, rubbish, he has called them and is awaiting a call back.

I tell you what, as you are so bright and clearly a wealthy property dealer I'll bet you £1000 that:

I have the letter stating the reason for refusal
That he has over 50 cars in stock, including a £200k Bentley
That he is VAT registered
And hell I'll even throw in that he has planning permission

We're only an hour away from Notts so do you fancy putting your money where your mouth is ?

What a utter lier lmao do you think for one min people believe this rubbish you post "o ya daddy gets £5000 profit per car and sell 200k bentleys from the house " ha ha ha your an embarrassment son.

read the guidance notes .... even if you just collect and deliver to fit alarms (for instance) trade plates can be granted ..... no premises though ... no plates

Technically they can't refuse you trade plates if you are a bona fide trader. The regulations do not give a minimum level of use although I have heard of this being said before. Its a jobsworth getting in on the act.
Ask to be shown the rule they are working to in writing, then get a solicitor to write them a letter. It will cost about £200 but it should clear the problem
