Standard car looks a bit boring but then so does the current one.

As usual in the UK as soon as the M Sport body kit and wheels are available you wont be able to move for them on the road.
yes Always the way, BMW know that there are plenty of people out there who will buy as they want to be seen in the very latest model and then a year later the M-Sport will come out which always looks much better they will all buy again.
the same crowd currently seen otside the nearest Apple store? hehe

Given the choice of this or an XF, I'd be RUNNING to the nearest Jag dealer. No excitement in Bee-Emm saloons anymore, such a shame.

Were you one of the ones posting seven years ago that the E39 would age very well next to the E60?

Looks pretty good to me, especially next to the yawnfests that are the Carina E, sorry XF and E-Class. Think I prefer the E60 in all honesty however, far preferred the edgy look to this new rounded look.

However it just goes to show that BMW really cannot win, especially on here. Try and design something a bit different they get slated for designing ugly abominations, tone it down a bit they get slated for being dull.

Dunno why but the phrase "victims of their own success" seem to spring to mind.

to be fair though, different doesn't have to mean 'in your face' revolution... different can be beautiful....
Insignia vs Vectra for eg....well maybe not beautiful but certainly an improvement in a new direction...

For my money, Audi still lead the way for execs, although in design terms mostly.

Audi reliability is poor.

The new 5-series, like the 3-series saloon, is just "a car".

This happens every time; the standard variants are almost always boring. I wouldn't go out and buy a base spec 5 series as they're drab. In fact I could say the same thing for every poverty specced BMW, but that does not and should not reflect badly on the entire range of cars.

The drivers cars will be along shortly....

This car is missing something that the XF has, and I don't know what it is.

Don't believe so, I've always liked both the e39 and e60. I liked the e60 even more after spending a weekend as a passenger in a e60 M5 and then borrowing a 535d for around a week. All excellent cars but I do like the look of the e60, I think it's simple and uncluttered and will in years to come look better than the new car. I don't believe the same distinction can be made between the e39 and e60 as they were very different designs, as I said I like both.

I love it when people come into a thread about a barge and talk about weight.

Fair enough if it was the new Lotus elise or a Caterham kit car, but this is a barge.

Crass exterior detailing (that spoils a good shape) and bug-eyed headlamps.

I do like the XF, but thye could have got it right so easily with just a bit more money spent on making it look like the Concept. The A6 does nothing for me, being based ona standard VAG fwd platform. I am still not old enough to buy an E Class and even when I am, I still won't find anything to enthuse me about it. The E Class is utterly competent all round, but not remotely interesting (and I have driven every generation of the last twenty years extensively).

very dull to look at, (same rear as the current 3 series which always reminds me of the mitsubishi carisma for some reason?) doesn't seem to be getting rave reviews anywhere?

perhaps BMW have been concentrating too much on SUV's?

Erm, what standard VAG FWD platform is the A6 based on?
