Not quite in the same vein as the other 'statements' above, but....

I really enjoyed earwigging the girl behind me in a queue the other day telling her friend that she was going to pick her Ford Ka up after having two new tyres fitted, and how she'd saved loads by ordering them online for just £176. I'm sorry, but anything more than £50 a corner on a Ka is just plain silly ! Hell, even £20 Linglongs would do. But the best was still to come. She then went on about how they weren't gonna rip her off and she'd asked for a fully itemised bill for the work they'd told her needed doing following the 'FREE brake check' which came in at £180 !!! I could probably fit new disks, pads, drums, shoes, callipers and pistons for £180 ! What's the guessing she probably was 6 months away from new pads and they skanked her good and proper ?

"how can you afford to insure that??!!"

Umm classic car policies and not driving like a cock?
Definitely this! I insure four cars for less than most of my colleagues insure one of theirs.

I also hate the first question being "how much is it worth?" rather than something about the car.

Nope, but a quite cute and slim brunette in a red minidress with very appealing legs. Her misguided authority on her subject was a bit of a put-off though.

Somebody opened a thread asking how to be a true PHer. And the above is as good an indicator as any - being put off an otherwise perfectly roger-able bit of totty by her poor attitude to things automotive.

Not having a dig at you, WE, you were perfectly right to be put off (unless back doors were involved).

A work colleague I once worked with was utterly adamant that he knew someone who owned a front wheel drive Sierra Cosworth. Mind you, he was also certain that the XJ220 was so named because the engine produced 220bhp, and that the Ferrari F40 cost over £4m new.

Guy at work reckons his Clio 172 does 150 MPH and is 4 WD because it's exactly the same as the rally version! The guy must weigh 22 stone too, I can't be botherd to argue with them to be honest.

Another one who is a complete fanny merchant reckons he has an Audi RS4. When I started to probe him about it he said "yeah you know the one, 600BHP, yeah the thats it the 3.7 LTR". He also reckons he owns 3 houses outright and has over 75K in the bank! Hmmmm, is that why your laying Altro floors for £10 an hour?

Nice 20k Mondeo you've got there. Worth much now?
i get that, with the 9 year old 330i i had and now with a 10 year old s2000, 'how much money do you get paid??'

to which the answer is, probably less than you i just don't waste it all on booze.
They never mention the fact my mate has a 1 year old 116i worth much more...

I also have a Clio Cup & to be fair, a lot of them are driven by Chavs. Not sure that makes the car chavvy though?

Generic people at work: OMG, my car is so old. I really need a new one.
Me: Oh really? How old is it?
GPAW: It's <typically 3-5> years old.
Me: *nods* Mine is 24 years old.

I think people have confused their wants and their needs.

Unfortunately that is the way it works.

If chavs didn't buy and ruin Saxos, they wouldn't be chavvy.

Although some cars are chavvy by design.

lol, my mate came out with this classic on the drive down to cornwall. Everyone else was agreed that doing 100mph where possible would result in getting to cornwall significantly earlier than 70...

There are certain cases where it's true though, particularly in cities with large numbers of traffic lights late at night. If you find the right speed you can "ride the green wave" but going faster just means you end up stopping at more red lights.

I turn up at work in my e36 318is.

Some bloke says, "You must get payed too much"

I reply, with as much enthusiasm as possible, "Why do you say that?"

"Well that was you in that BMW wasn't it?"

My fake smile has faded as all hopes for a level headed conversation is thrown on the fire: "Erm yeah"

"They must be paying you good money"

"Errr no, the older ones can be had for quite sensible money now"

"But the running costs is ridiculous, trust me!"

"This is my second, and are thought to be very reliable. Parts arn't too bad..."

"No no no, you'll be surprised how expensive parts are for BMWs. My brother in law had one."

"Well I was hoping it would cheaper to run than my TVR..."
